Dear Fungi Hivemind and and mycelia entangled saprophytic symbiotes/evolved Blockchain Humans.
After a short break, I am back with a new Mushroom Protocol. Before the new Mandates, I was denied entry for the weekly mushroom identification sessions at the association for mycological studies in Zürich of which I am a member since a year.
I was so excited to get back there, because of the fact that we have just a strong community interested in mycology and herbal medicine on the Hive. I am so grateful for this wonderful community on the Hive blockchain and I really appreciate what and
are doing with #fungilovers and
.
Many of you might be familiar that I love forests and worship trees. I delivered scientific proof that things like the biophilia effect and various health benefits from conifers through emitting terpenes are just a few things known on how trees benefits human health. In various posts like Forest Medicine I also cite numerous makeshift scientific papers because i'm not just convinced by one, but many ideas.
Being a supporter and passionate about the #herbalhive and #naturalmedicine, my previous post on this theme was disguised in a simple Sauerkraut Recipe, in which I covered the human microbiome genomic enhancement through lactobacillus probiotic bacteria.
Some of my posts on mushrooms covered a bit of the relation of prebiotic modulation of gut microbiota through SCFA(short chain fatty acids). For this hypothesis I combine various research papers and also add the links in my posts to cite the science behind my claims. Not only did I previously deliver a very good reason why prebiotic and probiotic foods are brain enhancing, but I also explained the endobiogenic relationships of neurotransmitters secreted by the enteric nervous system and how these complex signalling pathways are directly linked to your colonic flora, but by your gut brain axis are also in bidirectional communication with your central nervous system via the vagus nerve, connecting the viscera and the insula.
Mushrooms also have antitumoral and antioxidant agents constituting to a healthy microbiome, making it highly functional food.
These and more topics are things I will further cover in future series of posts on fungi.
In this Protocol I will go through regular Mushrooms. In this post it will be on non edible and just identifying random saprophytic and mycorrhizal fungi.
So far we covered:
While identifying mushrooms one should be very careful and consult the advice of a specialist. Mushrooms that aren't identified properly and ingested can cause intestinal stress, could be very toxic or even poisonous. In some cases they can even cause death. This blog content is only for personal and educational purposes and not a guide on mushroom picking.
This mushroom had a really pungent smell. It was old but had something like a rat that was dead for a short time and really going to smell bad in a few hours.
| Class | Agaricomycetes |
| Division | Basidiomycota |
| Family | Boletaceae |
| Order | Boletales |
| Genus | Boletellus |
| Scientific Name | Boletellus obscurecoccineus |
| Common Name | rhubarb bolete |
| Appearence | Boletellus fungi are differentiated from other mushrooms with pores by spores that are ribbed.SourceThe tubes on the underside of the cap are angular, depressed, yellowish, and covered with a partial veilSource |
| Type | Mycorrhizal |
| Odeur | Faint aniseed odour and a pleasant taste. |
| Culinary | Non-Edible |
| Habitat | In litter of eucalyptus forests and woodlands |
The name means it's from Austria.
| Class | Pezizomycetes |
| Family | Sarcoscyphaceae |
| Order | Pezizales |
| Division | Ascomycota |
| Scientific Name | Sarcoscypha austriaca |
| Common Name | scarlet elfcup |
| Appearence | The irregularly shaped cups have a smooth, bright red hymenial (fertile) inner surface and a felted outer surface. Cup diameter ranges from 2 to 7cm when fully expanded; height typically 1 to 2cm. The outer (infertile) surface is paler than the inside, sometimes pinkish but often with an ochre tinge. It is covered in tiny hairs, which in this species are in the form of tangled coils. The curly nature of these hairs is a crucial identifying characteristic, but to see it clearly requires strong magnification. The edges of young cups are often slightly incurved. There is a short stipe or stem, up to 3.5cm long and 0.3-0.7cm wide, often buried in moss or leaf litter. The stipe is the same colour as the outer surface of the cup or somewhat paler. Source |
| Habitat | On fallen hardwood twigs and branches - most often those that are partly buried in moss.Source |
| Type | Mycorrhizal |
| Odeur | Smell and taste pleasant but not distinctive. |
| Culinary | The Scarlet Elfcup and its close relative the Ruby Elfcup are considered by some authorities edible as long as they are thoroughly cooked. (Lacking in flavour, their main culinary value must be in the splash of colour that they could add to a mushroom dish.) A few field guides now record these fungi as inedible, and some even suggest that they are 'suspect'; therefore we advise against gathering Ruby Elfcups and Scarlet Elfcups for eating.Source |
| Habitat | Oyster Mushrooms are sometimes weakly parasitic but more often saprobic and found on dying or dead standing deciduous broadleaf trees, particularly Beech and oaks and sometimes on fallen trunks and large branches. |
| Class | Agaricomycetes |
| Division | Basidiomycota |
| Order | Polyporales |
| Family | Fomitopsidaceae |
| Genus | Daedalea |
| Scientific Name | Daedalea quercina |
| Common Name | oak mazegill |
| Appearence | Most often seen on oak stumps, the caps of this cork-like bracket fungus grow to between 6 and 20cm across and fruitbodies are commonly 2 to 5cm thick but occasionally much thicket at the centre of the attachment region. The tubes are in the form of large slots 1 to 3cm deep and 2cm wide; they are interconnected to form a maze-like structure with the slots generally aligned radially. The pale ocraceous walls of the maze vary greatly in thickness from one specimen to another but are typically of width similar to that of the slots.Source |
| Habitat | Daedalea quercina is saprobic and occurs on standing and fallen dead oak wood and, less frequently, Sweet Chestnut.Source |
| Odeur | Slight acrid odour; no distinctive taste but a very tough texture. Source |
Nature is sprouting and i'm exited to be looking for morels and calocybe gambosa very soon. Infected with mycophilia and immense passion, I hope to cover delicious dishes and take you on mushroom hunting trips, sharing valuable insights on how to spot various habitats and biomes with rhizospheres that yield fantastic fungi.
Thank you for reading
Best Wishes
