The most expensive World Cup ever around the sum of 220 billion dollars kicked off yesterday at 16:00 GMT. Before kick off, a very entertaining, high quality opening ceremony was aired which I must confess I enjoyed a lot.
The opening and closing ceremonies of tournaments like these are to die for and if you miss, I kinda feel you’ve missed out on an important part of the tournament.
So here I am seated by the TV before 15:00 hoping to catch every bit of the opening ceremony and to enjoy the experience.
The Al Bayt stadium was packed to full capacity with a lot of Qatari and Ecuadorian faithfuls. Fans from other countries were in attendance as well.
Marcel Desailly presented the trophy to the crowd and it was locked it up for it to be contested for again.

Few minutes later, the Emir of Qatar, FIFA president and other dignitaries took their seats and the main show began.

Morgan Freeman then entered the frame with his calm and soothing voice to present his narration on football and togetherness and how the World Cup in Qatar is going to unite everyone as “one big family”. He did so alongside a Qatari citizen, Ghanim Al Muftahwho gave some beautiful quranic recitations.

After the narration, quiet a number of people joined the actor and Ghanim and there was a performance from a Korean musician who performed “Dreamers” alongside a Qatari musician. The past World Cup songs including Shakira’s this time for Africa and K’Naan ‘s waving flag.

All this was packed into a 30-minute thriller and I must admit it was entertaining and I wasn’t disappointed at all.
