New Latin American Bible in chapter 16, verse 18 tells us:
"I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church; and the Doors of Hades (the powers of death) will not prevail against it.
Many people have misrepresented this verse by claiming that Jesus said that Peter was the rock. However, by the word we know that when the Bible speaks about the rock it is referring to the Lord Jesus Christ.
There are innumerable verses that argue that Jesus is the rock. For example, we find in the book of Deuteronomy 32: 3-4:
“For in the name of Jehovah I will proclaim. Bless our God! He is the Rock, whose work is perfect, because all his ways are righteousness. He is a faithful God, in whom there is no iniquity; It is fair and straight. ”(BY ESTUDIA LA BIBLIA POSTED ON MAR 5, 2014)
Peter himself argued that the rock is Jesus Christ when he said:
1 Peter 2: 4-6 - “Approaching you, the Living Stone - which was certainly rejected by men, but before God is chosen and precious - you too be built as living stones in the spiritual house to be a holy priesthood , in order to offer spiritual sacrifices, pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. This is why it contains the Scripture: Behold, I put in Zion the Stone of the angle, chosen and precious. And he who believes in him will never be ashamed. ”(BY STUDY THE BIBLE POSTED ON MAR 5, 2014)
Also the psalmist David He said
Psalm 62: 5-7 - “Oh my soul, rest only in God, for his hope is his. Only he is my rock and my salvation; It is my high refuge; I will not be moved. God is my salvation and my glory; in God is the rock of my strength and my refuge. "(BY STUDY THE BIBLE POSTED ON MAR 5, 2014)
All these verses show us that the rock is Jesus Christ and when Jesus said to Peter: "But I also tell you, that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church ..." He was not referring to Peter personally He was giving a promise that in those moments was received by Peter who had declared by the spirit that Jesus was the Christ the son of the living God. So this promise was for the church, Jesus was declaring that the church that was led by the holy spirit would rest on the rock that was the foundation of the church.
Obviously, the foundation is Jesus Christ who is equal to the rock. It is God's promise to his church, through Jesus Christ we have the power to bind and loose in heaven and on earth.
God has given us that privilege, of being able to build, tie and untie through the keys he has granted as a rock to the church.
