I think, as a society, we have either forgotten or warped the idea of freedom to something that it certainly was not meant to be, one now in which 'freedom' means the right to shop and buy whatever you fancy. We've also been taught since a young age to equate "freedom" with "happiness" and, ergo, happiness now means owning things.
We're a strange people.
