Home. Another word for safety. I haven't encountered one person who would think that not having a home is not important. I often wonder how being homeless might be liberating in a society where we confuse bricks with freedom.

Why are we so stuck in our fears? I read about mortgages and loans and I look at those people's faces: they are mostly happy. They feel that they have bought their right to happiness. They imagine growing a family, having kids and passing on that legacy to them. Soon they realize though that you can be miserable even in the finest walls. Conflict doesn't care about the building or the sky. It takes only humans and ego to fill a home with unsatisfaction and hatred. Those four walls that used to provide comfort and safety are now a prison. We live in a society where humans seek a refuge from pain, they get in debt to escape it and then they are trapped forever. Some believe that owning more will solve the problems, some just simply give up and sit in denial, some blame the other, some blame the stupid house and the neighbours. Whatever it takes, we want more and we despise the fact that a bought happiness never lasts.

The fixation for safety leads to spiritual poverty. Consumed by consumption, we think that owning is achieving. If you die empty handed, just as you were born, what have you achieved at all? A car, a house, stuff that we get because we see that others have stuff too.... They are all a subject of degradation. While the things we gave our soul and time for are losing value and charm, we lose ourselves. We lose others while chasing stuff instead of feelings. Who am I without everything that I own? Why we look down on the homeless just because they don't achieve high status? A miserable rich man is more worthy of happiness than a poor fellow sleeping under the sky? What if you consciously choose to sleep under the bare sky, are you then more noble because you pick the pain and endure it?

Fixations are so tricky because they make you lose the ability to ask yourself questions. You get one thing in mind and you don't stop until you get it. Rich or poor, the stuff you own is degrading as we speak. What happens to you, inside, as a person, is another story. Few fixate on that. Modernity looks more like the death of the spirit and the rise of consumption. We think that we escape misery when in fact we're struggling to buy it every day. With a smile on our face. Fixate on that for a moment and the road to happiness might not cost you anything at all.
