The last several years in the garden I have had a bumper crop of tomatoes and mints. Last year, for the first time, I tried my hand at growing corn and had some limited success. This year I'm going all out: corn, beans, snow peas, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, kale, and some herbs. I might even give potatoes a go. The biggest difference this year from last is that I am growing everything from seeds.
I do not have a large plot of land in which to grow vegetables, so I need to pick and choose and even grow some in large pots. I am planning on having a good 5 or 6 yards of quality soil delivered this year so I can make the best use of the space that I do have.
I'm growing two different sets of "three sisters:"
I do not have a good spot in the ground to grow these, so I'm using good quality .75 yard pots that will get some quality fertilizer.
I planted last weekend in a small greenhouse tray. It's still a little chilly at night for the seedlings, so I'm starting all growing in door under a UV light. I've seen some growth so far!
The big mess of sproutlets in the middle is the kale. There is also some good looking basil that I think was ready to make the move to a larger pot; the rest will sit a short while longer yet.
I've had good luck growing kale in pots and the basil, of course, will grow about anywhere. I'm thinking a few more days to a week indoors under the UV light might give them enough time to be ready for the big outdoors.
I'm also thrilled to see the tomato seeds begin to sprout, and there was a cucumber sprout too! The three sister's containers received a treatment of used coffee grounds today; I'm thinking the nitrogen intake will give them a boost and kick start them. I won't be too terribly dissapointed if I need to try them again, though. I'll give it another week and if I don't see green will start again from scratch.
