Unfortunately I missed galenkp@galenkp's weekend prompt (again). I've promised him I'll try to be better, but he and I both know that the promise is only to try and that my actual participation is likely, at best, once a monthly. To know me is to love me.

Despite missing the weekend prompt, I was able to not miss out on the weekend! The weekend arrived and I partook in it. It is, in fact, a three day weekend for those of us in the US, with Monday being Memorial Day. I count myself among the lucky to not know anyone who has died in armed service, either in Canada or the US. Still, my thoughts are with those who have been brave enough to put themselves in harms way to protect other people.

My main goal this weekend was to Get Enough Done to be able to thoroughly and completely enjoy the day tomorrow (Monday). It was a busy weekend!

Saturday was spent digging in the yard and a DIY project. I am finally getting to my gardening projects this year. Yes, I know it's the end of May, and I'm late, but I am now getting to it, and I am enjoying it. The garden is expanding this year. It's not much of a garden, maybe 60 or 70 square feet, but it still needed to be dug. And dig I did!

At least until it started to thunder, at which point I thought that hanging around outside with long gardening tools with a metal tip maybe wasn't the wisest of things to do.

I took the opportunity at that point to work on a project I've wanted to do for the last week. I have been recording very old 78rpm records and have very recently also started a live web broadcast with these records as the centre piece. Recording/broadcasting with 78rpm records on vintage wind-up phonographs is not the simplest of things to do. I've had to place microphones a few inches in front of the speaker to get the sound. It looks like this:

This is fine, and it worked well for the sound, but it was taking up a large amount of floor space. I have four phonographs that I use and having a microphone on a stand in front of each was not only leading me to trip on them, but it was blocking access to the phonographs themselves, as well as the storage beneath them. I needed to fix this.

I ultimately devised a cheap-ass system to hang the microphones from the rafters. A rod, some hooks, and some wood slats were all I'd need.

The rod with hook and slat:

Microphone held to slat with high-tech c-clamp audio-connection-device.

The end result. You can see the fourth phonograph way back in the distance.

This solution was dirt cheap to put together and not only does it work, but the slats can be moved and removed as needed. I'm quite proud of myself for this fix.

Sunday, however, was the best of the two days so far.

Sunday was, in fact, awesome.

Sunday I got to play with three sisters. plantstoplanks@plantstoplanks knows all about my goal here; she was indirectly responsible for setting me up.

I spent the day Sunday ploughing, planting, and laying three sisters in a nice row. 18 times. 18 times. By the end of the day I was quite exhausted, but also quite satisfied with my work.

The "three sisters" are a seed of corn, peas or beans, and squash (in my case, either summer squash or pumpkin) in the same mound. The idea is that the peas/beans will grow up the corn, and the squash will keep weeds away.

My garden isn't big! But it's now full of sisters.

I'm using leaves as a mulch covering. I don't rake up my tree leaves in the autumn but leave them and usually mow them back into the ground in spring. I still have in corners of the yard that I'm collecting. My hope is that they will not only keep the moisture in but, as they decompose, will add minerals to the ground.

In addition to this I spent some quality time at the city's free mulch pile to collect mulch for other yard projects. I have a habit of not throwing out cat litter tubs because, frankly, they're good tubs. Observe:

I've put together a small plot in the back yard for fallen branches and such to begin to decompose. I'm using this mulch to cover them to expedite the process. I will then use the resulting mulch/dirt for more gardening.

(not shown today are the bins holding potatoes, onions, and additional pumpkins; I'm going to add a few more peas and possibly a couple cucumbers).

These cat boxes are really good for above ground gardening. My back yard is lucky to grow grass, but I have plenty of space for above ground work.

Finally, I moved this old child's play tower from my neighbours yard to the side of the house. The neighbours helped me get it over the fence, then I moved the fucker on my own across the yard and raised it in the correct spot. That fucker was heavy.

This play tower is going to be repurposed into a 'catio.' My cats do not go outside, despite telling me repeatedly that they would like to. I'm going to put a small door on this (so I can get inside to clean it) and then surround it with chicken wire (to keep the cats inside) a good net (to keep the bugs outside) and jury-rig an entrance from the window. It will either be awesome, or I will lose cats. I'm betting on the former.

A busy weekend, but one that is leaving me feeling good. Now tomorrow I spend with the boys.
