This is THE global group for long distance motorcycle riders. The IBA promotes safe, long-distance riding and the only thing you have to do to become a member is complete one of their rides, which can be done individually. The shortest of these rides is the Saddlesore, which is 1000 miles in 24 hours or less. You simply keep your fuel receipts and pair those with a witness to start your ride and you too can be a certified Iron Butt Rider!
I know one of these animals locally and aspire to be one myself someday, the things I enjoy the most are listening to his tips and tricks on how to manage and maximize your distance riding. Some of the tips from their Archive of Wisdom are;
Know your limits and plan accordingly - Don't sign up for 1500 miles if the most you have ever done is 300. Peak Mileage is day one and two, it's all downhill from there!
Prepare your machine for the ride, but be careful to avoid new accessories or last minute fixes - This is a tip I follow for general rides/rallies as well. That last minute change that becomes a time intensive task will leave you empty handed or frustrated just as your getting started. It's better to use what you know!
Stop to go faster - Quit worrying about high speeds and focus on a comfortable pace that you can maintain. Use your breaks wisely and be sure to walk around during gas stops to get the blood pumping to those sore muscles!
Stay hydrated and eat healthy foods- taking good care of your body during grueling long distance riding will result in a much better experience overall.
Use a tracking device - While relatively new to the market, these tools will help you for multiple reasons; sharing your experience with friends & family, documenting your ride to become legit, and emergency personnel in case of an accident.
