Road trips are such a bad idea in Nigeria and it's like setting yourself up for a death trap.
Today I had a terrible scare and was near tears when I couldn't reach my boyfriend who was on his way home from my place. Ordinarily, it's an easy trip, only two hours away and the roads are quite alright.
About thirty minutes into the trip he stopped replying my messages and didn't answer his phone. Just before he stopped replying, he had said he saw a man with a double barrel gun casually pissing on the road. Not a uniformed man or anything, just someone holding a gun.
It was alarming because that path has been notorious for kidnappings in the last few weeks. Imagine not reaching him soon after he sees a random person with a gun? I nearly peed in my pants. It turned out his phone was in his pocket all the while and he was very safe.
It was over an hour of worry for myself and my mum and knowing he got home safe, I let out a huge sigh of relief.
It's quite unfortunate that such a short trip could go wrong because of vices like these. You really have to pray to your Chi to guide you whenever you step out the house because the times are terrible.
My dad stayed out late today and we were worried again. It was just 6pm but we were worried because he was going to take the same route that has been terrorized by armed robbers and killers the past two days. He got back home and told us how deserted the roads were.
Taking trips around and out of town are now top ways to die, I hear it comes with the Christmas season. Definitely not a good start.
Is it Christmas-sy at your end yet? Getting gifts from Santa or are you gifting 'Santa'?
