Hidden people
When I read the hospital record of the patient who I was going to visit next, I couldn’t decide whether I was more frightened of where he lives or who he was. I was going to have to drive into the worst

My baby’s baby
My daughter’s baby girl is named Hannah. Her father is Burmese, so Hannah has darker coloring than her mom but the same curly hair and sassy attitude. In Texas, calling a girl “sassy” is a compliment.

How can she smile? She's bedridden!
I paid a nursing visit to a young woman who cried when she told me her story -- How frustrating and lonely it is to be stuck at home; How her whole life was changed by an illness she never could've imagined

To the nursing home, or to Paris, France?
My patient has jet black hair with 3 inches of white roots showing. She weighs 300 lbs (136kg) and gets around in her wheelchair by pushing herself with her bandaged feet. Huge metal oxygen canisters are

Texas Hispanics may surprise politicians
I have been driving around the poor neighborhoods of DFW for the past month, seeing patients again, after a year of absence. Let me tell you what I notice: lots more Spanish signs and businesses everywhere.

Texas tornadoes
Three years ago, powerful tornadoes tore through my brother's Texas neighborhood. I've lived in Texas all my life, and tornadoes are a fact of life here - rare but regular disasters that affect a few people

Baby chicks - I'm awe-struck!
Our Australorp hen has been sitting eggs for the past 22 days. Two chicks died in the shell, and I was nervous that the rest of the eggs wouldn't hatch either. But tonight when I went to the backyard to

My hen is broody and I am nervous!
I have 11 hens and one rooster in my suburban backyard. Four weeks ago one of the hens went broody. I wasn't that interested in having little chicks to care for in the middle of winter, but I couldn't

My Korean grandbaby
When I take her to the store by myself here in Dallas, people smile at us. They probably don't realize that this little girl has my nose and lips - she doesn't look like me, does she?! But she's my son's

Grandbaby took one look at Santa, and cried!
My 11-month-old granddaughter went to the mall to meet Santa Claus for the first time today. Too young! She didn’t want that strange man holding her! She cried! Smart girl.

Biracial Half Korean/Half White

Downtown Austin Texas at dusk
My husband and I went to Austin to watch 750,000 bats come out from under the Congress Street Bridge at dusk. We walked on a dirt path along the river and got a beautiful glimpse of downtown Austin.
