The Gospel of Luke recounts this moment when Mary paid a visit to her relative Elizabeth following her encounter with the angel Gabriel. The two women had something very unusual in common. Both were carrying miracle babies whose conceptions were announced by the angel Gabriel. I am sure they had a lot to talk about!
Mary’s words that are recorded are her song of praise for all the amazing things that God has done not only for her but for her people. That song of praise is called the Magnificat, and it is prayed daily in monasteries and convents all around the world as well as by all priests and anyone else who happens to pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
I resonate so well with the sentiment of this prayer. The idea of beginning by thanking God for what He has done for me, and then placing myself within the big picture of salvation history and thanking God for what He has done for all His people so deeply moves me. It’s like this reminder that I’m part of something way bigger than me, and yet God who orchestrates it all still pays attention to me as an individual—a deeply cherished one at that.
I often write (either in this space or in the therapy diary) of the progress in my journey. I don’t directly credit God each time I share something, but His hand on my life is never far from my mind.
I can say along with Mary, truly the Lord has done great things for me and Holy is His Name!
