Many years ago I took my first steps in 3D modelling just to switch to other software pretty quick. For whatever reason, I can't remember anymore.
However, I came back to modelling, also in order to be able to move a bit into 3D printing for my model train project (see my blog for more).
And, of course, I started - again - with good old blender guru donut...
As for previous versions, Andrew Price has a donut tutorial series for the current Blender version, which is 3.0
Back then, when I started learning with some early 2.x version of Blender, the user experience in terms of usability and the general UI was... meh.
Glad to see, that with Blender 3.0 the improved this aspect a lot!
Again, I started with a Torus (which is actually the scientific term for "donut-shape") and tweaking its surface to have it less perfect.
The icing is basically just the a scaled and deformed upper half of the donut put on top.
Blenders shrink-wrapping functionality makes this a pretty simple process by now.
Time for coloring.
The donut dough got his typical brownish color from baking including a slightly brighter stripe in the middle.
The icing I made was initially pink which I later changed to brown. I just like a chocolate topping more :D
After adding fancy sprinkles and other details on top the animation process started, which was completely new to me.
There are a bunch of similarities to the animation editor from Unreal Engine but yet it's different. I actually would say it's easier than in Unreal Engine.
After all, I wanted is a rotating donut and some raining sprinkles in the background. No rocket science.
A big part, also new for me, is the Composing editor. A powerfull tool for, lets say post processing.
Many things can be tweaked here.
I will need to spend many hours here to get at least a clue of all its features and possibilities.
Last but not least, after the rendering has been done I used the build in video editor (which is acutally not bad) to get a short video done of the complete animations.
Additional fine tuning can be done here as well.
After about 8 hours of work I finally got my first donut animation done in Blender 3.0
I am really looking forward for future projects, although I don't know yet where to go from here.
Both character design as well as architecture are very appealing to me. Either for printing and painintg models again (like for Warhammer I did many years ago) or for my model train.
Time will tell...
Anyways, please enjoy my tasty rotating donut! :D
If you want to start with 3D modelling in Blender as well, I higly recommend the "Blender Guru" channel on YouTube -> https://www.youtube.com/c/BlenderGuruOfficial
