Only last week, after a long time of silence, there was a sign of life for the remake of the German role-playing classic Gothic

With the Barcelona-based studio Alkimia Interactive, publisher THQ Nordic presented a completely new in-house team that will take care of the development of the title in the future. Now, just in time for the twentieth anniversary of the original, those responsible have revealed a few additional details.

On March 15th, exactly two decades(!) after the original release of the RPG milestone, a separate shop page was launched on Steam to celebrate the day.
Among other things, you can see a handful of new screenshots that highlight the revised look of the game world. The valley of mines of Khorinis shines there in the splendor of the Unreal Engine 4.

Although shine might not be the right word. Because even with a look at the previously published pictures and videos of the new edition, the optics were tweaked a little. The scenery now looks much darker. Compared to the first playable teaser from 2019, the color saturation is visibly lower, and the effect of chromatic aberration has also been reduced.

Unfortunately, there is still no exact release date. According to the current status, only the message "Coming Soon" welcomes you on Steam. A buy button is also not yet available, but you can add the title to your wish list or find out about the system requirements. For example, 30 gigabytes of storage space are required.

We can expect more details about the publication in the coming months. The new development studio was only introduced a few days ago, but Alkimia Interactive has actually been working on "Gothic 1 Remake", as the title is now on Steam, for around a year.

Then the creators could also tell something about the revised combat system. While the story and world of the game should remain largely untouched and true to the original, the developers have already announced a few changes that should carry over the system from back then to modern times.

Fittingly, there was a first opponent artwork of the bird-like scavengers on Twitter, which now look much more martial in the new edition.

About the game

The developers describe their work the following

The Kingdom of Myrtana has been invaded by an implacable horde of orcs.
King Rhobar II, in need of a large quantity of magical ore in order to forge powerful weapons, operates the Khorinis mines with all available prisoners. To prevent them from escaping, the monarch asks his best magicians to create a magical barrier. But something goes wrong. The magic gets out of control and a mutiny turns the mines into a wild territory now controlled by the most violent prisoners.

The King is forced to negotiate with the new owners, while the tension between the different factions of the mines increases. What no one expects is that the arrival of an unknown prisoner will change absolutely everything.
