The original Gothic game was one of the first 3D RPGs I have played - it seems like a life time away now. I still remember renting the game from a friend in school and trying it out for the first time. Luckily my PC at the time could handle it. Although the game controls were very clumsy, the game itself quickly pulled me into its world. Upon replaying the Remake now I realize, however, how little I actually remember from the original game.
There are a couple of places that trigger some memories from the Original . Of course the world itself looks completely different now with the revamped graphics. So there are more like situations which were kept from the original - like transforming into a meat bug to get into a monastery etc.
For several weeks after the release of the Remake, I hesitated buying it. The main reason is that I am not too interested in games anymore. Or rather, it is very difficult to get sucked into a game world - a common occurrence among grown ups I guess. But many reviewers directly addressed this "issue" and talked about how different the game felt to the many theme park games we get nowadays.
This is probably the strongest point of the game: it feels and plays just like the original, with the many ups and downs that come with it. But it is actually the many challenges that make the game stand out and actually memorable. For instance, one dies over and over in the first hours and days of the game. Even Molerats will give you a hard time. It's this steep learning curve that most modern game studios have learned to dismiss as a bad user experience. But it is exactly this experience which makes this game so different and likeable.
The difficulty of not knowing where everything is (no map markers), and having to actually learn how to survive and progress in the world is what makes the game much more engaging and fun overall - sure, it may not be the greatest experience at the beginning, but it's something that grows on the player over time.
If you are a gamer at heart, but lost the will to play due to the recycling of content and game mechanics, Gothic Remake will likely be a breath of fresh air to you. Give it a try; but beware of the early critters. They will give you a hard time.
