I wrote my first lines of code whe ln I was about 12 years old.
I always wanted to create "my perfect computer game". Now, 20 years later, not much has changed. In that matter.
Early Beginnings
So, here was sitting 12 year old me, wondering how games like Warcraft 2 (my favorite game back then) was made. A friend of mine said that they probably used C++ or so.
My uncle had an old book about visual basic. "Close enough" I thought. So I borrowed it and failed horribly.
Something about integers and loops. I didn't see how this was about game development?
An Eternity Later
As the child I was I lost interest quite fast. But coding still was the big thing for me. The next thing I tried was HTML. Back then, I felt like the absolute pro beeing able to create an own website. (remember, it was around year 1998, nothing about responsive websites and dynamic content)
Years passed by, I started to use C# and Javascript at work and there was this little flame still burning and getting bigger... You wanted to create a game, remember?!
This Time I Gonna Make It Right
By now, I totally understood that I need integers and for-loops for building a game. But I learned fast that there is a BIG difference betwee beeing able to build a game und beeing able to build a game that is fun to play.
So I grabbed a book. And a second one. Tried to understand, what is the psychology behind game development.
Many concepts later I am quite close to my goal...
Get The Team Ready
Creating everything on your own is hard. Except you're some genius who can create all sorts of needed assets (graphics, sound, code...)
Luckily I found a great team (4 people now) I finally started creating a real computer game with.
Yet, the hardest task is to create an immersive and entertaining game experience. Who would have guessed. Telling an interesting story is the next big thing.
At the end... Writing actual code is getting less and less of an issue. Except some weird bug fixes :D
We are still good on track an look forward to the release of our very first commercial game. Childhood dreams come true.
