Perhaps if you understood why I chose to make my daughter’s house slippers, it would make sense. For one, her little feet kept getting dirty, no matter how often I cleaned the floors. I wanted something simple and comfortable for her, but more than that, I wanted to use what I already had on hand. I didn’t want to run to the store or support big companies if I didn’t have to. Making them myself just felt right.... so I found a way to share the extra love.
Why this Matters?
Unless, something impactful happens at the store….you don't remember the trip to buying your first pair of house slippers. You don't really remember any particular store trip….because they exist like background noises. They're there but you tend to forget about them since it's a mundane task that doesn't take much energy.
Making something on the other hand, that's time invested thinking about how you want to make it. What stitch do you want to use? Color? Also, an opportunity to have the second person involved in the process. A bonding moment.
I pulled out the leftover yarn that I used to make a scarf and the only knitting needles I had and got to work. All while my daughter played and watched a movie.
How I made it Happen?
I pulled up this youtube video...
Though I didn't have the exact materials I needed….(specifically the right size needles). I did it anyway.
I stitched and stitched…
Took breaks when my wrist began to hurt.
Made more stitches….until finally I had my knitted square patch.
I placed it on my daughter's feet to wrap it around.
Her face lit up when she realized that what I was making was for her.
I made a mental note of where I needed to stitch the ends together.
Then I got back to work, motivated by her smile.
Stitch by stitch.
She was giddy with excitement.
And stitch by stitch.
I was happy to create this memory.
Finally I was done….
I placed the imperfect grey slippers on her small feet.
She ran and jumped around the house with them on. Proud of what I had done.
Ready to share to anyone who would listen.
I was happy that she was happy.
And she finally has slippers to wear on her feet…..
