I saw a video which made me wonder if what I am seeing or looking at us actually happening at that moment. These question might have crossed your mind too, but you might not have gotten any answer.
It might sounds so strange, but our eyes doesn't show us the exact present. What we often see is the light that has already travelled to our eyes.
Now, let me use this as an example. When you are looking at an object or someone who is right in front of you, we can't see them immediately but the light on their body has to reflect off their body and enters our eyes. Then our brain has to process that information before we can be able to recognise what we are seeing.
The rate at which light travels is incredibly and super fast, and that is roughly about 300,000 kilometres/second. That is where the phrase speed of light comes from. There is always a delay even though the person is close, but the speed is so fast that we never notice the delay.
But using the sun as an example. The sunlight we are looking at or touching our skin left the sun eight minutes and twenty seconds ago. That means we are not seeing the sun or feeling it as it is in the present, we are feeling it as it was in the past. Not the exact moment.
Now, going out at night and seeing all those shining stars, looking at them, the light we see them emit may have been travelling towards the earth thousand of years ago.
When we look at the space, it's like looking through a time machine. When an object is very far away from us, the farther back in time its light can show us.
But because I said looking at the space is like looking through a time machine does not mean we can see through the future or our eyes can see through time. What our eyes is doing is too recieve the light that takes time to reach it.
Everything we see around us no matter how fast our eyes seems to have captured it comes with a tiny delay. And with the help of our brain that process that signals which makes it looks like we are experiencing it in the present. This is so fascinating a way that simply opening our eyes mean we are looking into the past which looks like the present.
Now, let me know if you have ever thought that when you look at the sun you imagined it was the present not knowing that tye sun you are feeling or seeing was more than eight minutes ago.?
