A lot of you might have experienced that moment when you felt so cold, and looking at your skin, you noticed some tiny bumps appearing all over.

That does not only happen during the cold; sometimes it appears on the skin when we feel scared or listen to beautiful music that fills our soul. But why do we feel like that?

In our body, there are tiny muscles that are attached to every hair follicle. So anytime we feel cold or there is this strong emotion that hits us, our nervous system can make those muscles contract. And the contraction causes those hairs on our bodies to stand up, thereby creating those bumps that we all know as goosebumps.

The interesting part of this is that, when this reaction happens to animals, they make their fur before it stands up, which always helps them to look or appear bigger when they are threatened, and some use it to trap warmth.

In humans we still have such a reaction, even though there is not enough hair on our body for it to make such a difference. So, next time, when you check your skin and notice goosebumps, remember that it is normal and your body is making use of the old survival response.

Have you ever noticed this on your skin before knowing fully well that it is reacting to emotions like excitement or fear?
