Here in BC Canada it is Family Day. Which is a holiday they created so that families could spend time together, so the kids had the day off of school, and luckily for us the weather was beautifully sunny. I decided to take the kids out in nature for the morning, we have been cooped up with rainy weather lately so it was a nice change. We went for a drive out into the woods, and found a couple spots to get out and explore. I of course brought my camera!
I've been a single mom for a few years now, and the first couple years, family day was a reminder that my kids came from a "broken home" but this year, I am starting to feel like the old ways of thinking, are not relevant anymore. I grew up in a society that stresses the ideal of a conventional family. Without really questioning it, I believed that was what everyone should be striving for. This year I've taken a closer look at who I am and and how my little family dynamics work. I am happier as a single mom than I ever was in a relationship. I realized today, that this family I have now is MY ideal family. Everyone has the choice of what ideal means to them. So for the first time I truly enjoyed family day.
I got my kids to take a pic with me, and I managed to get a few background shots for composite work. When I got home, I put together another image from my self-portrait session ( https://steemit.com/photography/@wildempress/behind-the-scenes-with-a-self-portrait-photographer-video ) and one of the shots I got today of the river.
I decided to edit this one with a freedom theme, because that is how I am feeling today as I reflect on my life as a single person.
What do you guys do when spending time with loved ones? Do you have a Famliy Day holiday where you come from, if so how do you celebrate it? And what I would really love to know is what is YOUR ideal family?
