Agreed. They can be a lot of fun if you can find some casual groups of people that don't take it too seriously and overly concerned with being the best at it. Destiny was actually kind of fun just wandering around and completing random objectives even though the loot you got was normally really shit. I don't really even know how one gets ahead in that game as some of the progress is really vague and of course, pushes you towards a paywall instead of actually doing the objectives that are often quite difficult and tedious.
I was playing and enjoying the crap outta that game for a while but then got frustrated how the entire game was built around basically forcing you to spend real world money to get to certain parts of it.
Then things got worse when most of the player base started to leave and most maps were filled with almost no one and therefore the previously fun group activities were impossible. Something similar happened with GW2 in that people were just boss running constantly and not even bothering with anything else. Why? Just in the pursuit of higher and higher level equipment so they can do it again... but faster!
