## Why should you read The Intelligent Investor ? Although I haven't read the original 1949 version, it remains a benchmark when it comes to common-sense investing. The version I read is annotated and incorporates some of the original's references into today's world. A key point for any finance book is to extract the basic and universal concepts that work in any situation, and *The Intelligent Investor* does this masterfully, addressing concepts like margin of safety, defining what constitutes an investment and speculation, outlining strategies for aggressive and conservative profiles, discussing capital allocation, and many other fundamental concepts for anyone, whether an investor or not, since margin of safety, for example, can be applied daily. One aspect I consider somewhat negative, but understand is necessary, is the use of examples based on events that occurred during Graham's time as an investor. These contextualizations can make the reading a bit tedious, leading one to want to skip those parts and move on to the explanation of concepts. In an era where social media is full of tricks, magic formulas, and investments with high returns, having the support of a classic to help you is fundamental. Graham's various concepts as references are based on common sense that people end up forgetting when investing, the greatest example being Margin of Safety. When buying an asset, you wouldn't buy it at its peak, since you're paying more than it's worth; you wouldn't buy it at its true value, because if it falls a little you're already negative; but if you buy it a little below its real value, then you have a "MARGIN" that gives you "SECURITY" in case there is a fluctuation in value. Do you understand how simple it is, but that nobody usually does or thinks about? To give you an idea of what you'll find in the book, right at the beginning is the definition of investment: "An investment operation is one that, after in-depth analysis, promises security of the invested capital and an adequate return. Operations that do not meet these conditions are speculative." Just following this simple concept, and understanding the difference between investment and speculation, already allows you to avoid falling for many scams. This is because you will immediately ask yourself: 1) Will the capital be safe? This will lead you to thoroughly analyze the project before investing. 2) Adequate return. This avoids false promises and also helps you choose investments with low returns. A tip is to observe how much the safest possible investment is paying, which is usually the country's debt security, and look for something close to that. ---

## Por que você deveria ler O Investidor Inteligente? Por mais que eu não tenha lido a versão original de 1949, ainda seja uma referência quando o assunto é investir com base no bom senso, a versão que eu li é comentada e traz algumas das referências do original para os dias de hoje. Um ponto de atenção para qualquer livro de finanças é buscar extrair os conceitos básicos e universais que funcionam em qualquer situação e isso o livro O investidor Inteligente faz com maestria abordando os conceitos de margem de segurança, definindo o que seria um investimento e uma especulação, definindo estratégias para perfis agressivos e conservadores, comentando sobre alocação de capital, entre muitos outros conceitos fundamentais para qualquer pessoa, seja ela investidora ou não, já que margem de segurança por exemplo pode ser aplicada no dia a dia. Um ponto que eu considero um pouco negativo do livro, mas entendo que é necessário, são as exemplificações com bases em acontecimentos que aconteceram no período em que Graham ainda atuava como investidor. Essas contextualizações, acabam deixando a leitura um pouco cansativa, dando vontade de pular essas partes e ir para as explicações de conceitos. Em uma época em que as redes sociais estão recheadas de macetes, fórmulas mágicas, investimentos com retornos elevados, ter o apoio de um clássico para te auxiliar é fundamental. Os diversos conceitos de Graham como mencionados são baseados em um bom senso que as pessoas acabam se esquecendo ao investir, sendo o maior exemplo o de Margem de Segurança. Ao comprar um ativo, você não compraria ele na alta, já que está pagando mais pelo que ele vale, não compraria no valor que ele vale, porque se cair um pouco você já fica negativo, mas se comprar um pouco abaixo do seu valor real, então você tem uma "MARGEM" que te dá uma "SEGURANÇA" caso haja uma oscilação no valor. Entende como é algo simples, mas que ninguém costuma fazer ou pensar? Para ter uma noção do que você encontrará no livro, temos já logo no início a definição de investimento: "Uma operação de investimento é aquela que, após análise profunda, promete segurança do capital investido e um retorno adequado. As operações que não atendem a essas condições são especulativas". Apenas seguindo essa conceituação simples, e entendendo a diferença de investimento para especulação, já permite com que você evite cair em diversos golpes que aparecem. Isso porque você já vai se perguntar: 1) O capital estará seguro? Fazendo com que você analise o projeto a fundo antes de entrar. 2) Retorno adequado. O que evita as falsas promessas e também escolher investimentos que tenham um baixo retorno. Uma dica é observar quanto o investimento mais seguro possível está pagando, que costuma ser o título de dívida do país e buscar algo que seja próximo disso. ---
