Art of Religion · Act V
The Philippines has been colonized by Spain for more than 300 years. With that our culture has been influenced by Spain and it would show in our architecture, food, clothing and art. In the past years, I have been visiting the National Museum of the Philippines. During my visit, I was able to take photos of the artworks on display.
Today I would like to invite you on a quiet walk and see Spanish art from the 18th to 19th century.
Artist · Mariano Asuncion Y Molo (1802-1885)
Title · Nuestra Senora Del Pilar De Zaragoza
Dated · Mid to late 19th Century
Material · Oil on Canvas
The painting is a representation of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is said that she has manifested herself to the Apostle James the Greater during his sermon.
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar located in Zaragoza, Spain is a majestic tribute to the apparition.

This is a representation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and it is known that Mary gave the Scapular to a Carmelite. In celebration, a liturgical feast is held every July 16th.
Artist · Adorable Castro Andrade
Title · Nuestra Senora De Las Nieves
Dated · 1790
Material · Oil on Panel
This is a representation of the Virgin of the Snows. The story goes that a wealthy noble couple in Rome prayed to the Virgin Mary on how they could use their wealth for the Christian benefit. The Virgin Mary appeared before them and told them that a temple should be built. As a sign, snow fell on August 5th to indicate a specific location where the temple will be built. Today the temple is called Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor.
It is a mystery why Nuestra Senora De Las Nieves which is related to snow has a lot of red in the painting.
The frame of the painting is beautiful coming from 1790 it is in good condition. At the bottom of the painting there are some writings and If anyone could translate would be great.
Another section the gallery and not a lot of people visit this area. I like it this way which is very peaceful and quiet. Almost feels like you are in a church.

There is not much information I could find about this piece. It is possible that it might be dedicated to a Spanish Galleon that could have been used in the Spanish Armada.
