We've got two old layers , two roosters and two ducks still to do. I hope we can get to it before the cold sets in.

RE: Looking for Roofing - October 17, 2019 @goldenoakfarm
I remember the first time I slept under a metal roof, it had a rainy night and it actually kept me awake the whole time, it was so loud. I'm used to the softer sound of a tile roof. Either way getting

RE: A quick homestead update
I went to the doctors again and it seems it'll take another month at least. Last weekend it was real bad, the doctor said if I went to the ER they would've kept me there. Fortunately our doctor is an older

Maybe not my place but I have a business where I grow insects for human consumption and worked for some of the larger ones in the past. We are allowed to grow four insects in our country, grasshopper being

RE: The milker update
Thank you. Good point, I should mention I've put my finger in the milking claw to see what it feels like. It feels like a very light sucking, not nearly as much as her own kid does. Apparently it doesn't

RE: A short update, the heat record broke.
Tomorrow! I just need someone to take a picture of the milker in use. Maybe tonight if my hubby is in the mood to do so.

RE: The time when you really appreciate being a homesteader
Yes, I start earlier when it's stil cool to do most of the chores. My doe does not get milked, since I share the milk with her baby it is easy for me to skip a few days. I do not want to burden her body

The national news just came in with a report (we are not at the peak temp of the day yet) There is a nationwide smog alert (we never have smog..) Bridges won't close since the material expanded to much.

RE: There's a Hole in My (Worm) Bucket, Dear Liza: Free Range Worm Farms
Nice worm farm! I have too many other projects going on so I'll hold off on the worm thing myself. As for general composting and rats, we follow Salatin's example. He puts a large amount of carbon on the

No milking today. Predictions are 107/108F today. Let me remind you we call it high summer when it's 71-ish.

RE: A hot summer update on the garden.
We started constructing it three years ago. We bought this land as empty pasture, no fences, trees, shrubs.. nothing! Some trees came up as volunteers after the pigs tore the ground up (isn't a seed bank

We are supposed to be zone 8 but I disagree whoever put that map out. I think 7 is more accurate. The strawberries were actually some leftover plants that I planted on a whim. Large weeds grew over them

Nice setup! Having 8 week old piglets tossing dirt on the bottom wire can be a thing yes. We raise it as they get a little older but I agree all fences should be checked as part of a daily routine. We
