Hesitantly, she stopped at his table, clutching her lunch box.
“Mind if I sit?” she asked, nodding toward the empty seat.
He didn’t look up. His fork moved lazily through his food, eyes fixed on the lunch box in front of him. No answer.
She glanced around the dining hall as if searching for permission in the noise and movement. When she was satisfied with her sweep, she slid into the chair and began unpacking her lunch.
She tried to start a conversation. Her likes, dislikes, little bursts of herself spilled into the quiet.. but he stayed silent, unbothered. Maybe he wanted her gone. But she was relentless, words tumbling out as if silence itself dared her to fill it.
With his fork frozen halfway, he peeked out from the shadow of his hoodie and made a mental note: She’s such a creep.
He set the fork down, closed his lunch box, and pushed back his chair.
They say I’m the creep, he thought, standing. But they haven’t met her.
