A few days ago, after some changes were made to our work arrangements at the hotel where we had been staying, we moved back to the hotel where I normally work. Once the services were restored, including the water supply, I opened the tap and noticed something unusual: the water came out looking completely white.

I asked one of the workers from the technical services department about it, and he told me that the magnesium in the water was responsible for that appearance. His answer made me think about something I had not considered in a long time.

So instead of simply accepting the explanation, I decided to look more closely at what was happening. I filled a glass with the water and watched it for a while. The interesting part was that the whiteness did not remain the same. The water began to clear almost immediately, with the transparent area appearing from the bottom and moving upward.

That behavior gave me another possible explanation. The water itself was not necessarily becoming white because of a dissolved substance. What I was probably seeing was a huge number of tiny air bubbles suspended throughout the water. When the water supply is restored, the pumping process and the air remaining inside previously empty pipes can contribute to this phenomenon.
Ese comportamiento me llevó a otra posible explicación. El agua en sí no necesariamente se estaba volviendo blanca por una sustancia disuelta. Lo que probablemente estaba viendo era una enorme cantidad de pequeñas burbujas de aire suspendidas en el agua. Cuando se restablece el suministro, el proceso de bombeo y el aire que permanece dentro de tuberías que habían quedado vacías pueden contribuir a este fenómeno.
As the tiny bubbles rise and escape, the water gradually becomes transparent again. That is exactly what I was able to observe in the glass, and I also recorded a short video while the change was taking place.

What caught my attention was how something so simple could become a little chemistry lesson right in front of me. I had opened the tap expecting nothing more than water, and a few seconds later I was looking at a phenomenon that made me remember my university studies and the way I used to analyze things from a chemical point of view.

Sometimes a simple glass of water can be enough to remind us that there are interesting things happening around us all the time, even when we normally do not stop to look at them.
