Esta serie nace de caminar sin prisa y mirar con intenci贸n.
Despu茅s de una pausa la mirada regresa al litoral matancero, porque en esta ciudad el mar siempre termina apareciendo de una forma u otra.
Hoy me detuve en un lugar muy conocido por quienes durante a帽os buscaron un espacio para compartir frente al agua: La Costa.
M谩s que un simple restaurante, este sitio siempre tuvo algo especial por su ubicaci贸n. Est谩 construido junto al mar, en una zona donde la costa cae varios metros hacia las rocas y las olas rompen con fuerza contra el litoral. Desde all铆 no solo se ve el mar.
Se siente.
La brisa llega cargada de sal.
A veces incluso peque帽as gotas alcanzan a quienes est谩n sentados cerca cuando las olas golpean fuerte abajo.
Hay lugares donde el paisaje acompa帽a.
Aqu铆 el paisaje forma parte de la experiencia.
Durante mucho tiempo fue habitual ver familias y grupos de amigos llegando sobre todo los fines de semana. El lugar contaba con un 谩rea amplia de parqueo que tambi茅n era utilizada por quienes visitaban espacios cercanos como La Sirenita, una tienda muy conocida en la zona que adem谩s ten铆a una terraza en el segundo piso donde muchas personas se reun铆an a conversar, tomar cerveza y simplemente mirar el mar.
Todo parec铆a formar parte del mismo ambiente.
Con los a帽os, como ocurri贸 con tantos otros espacios de la ciudad, las ofertas gastron贸micas comenzaron a disminuir. El movimiento ya no era el mismo. Poco a poco el lugar perdi贸 parte de la vitalidad que lo caracterizaba y termin贸 cerrando temporalmente para una remodelaci贸n reciente realizada por una empresa privada de construcci贸n.
El cambio m谩s visible ocurri贸 precisamente en el 谩rea donde antes estaba el parqueo.
All铆 construyeron una especie de peque帽o parque con aceras de hormig贸n, bancos y un gran cartel de Matanzas que visualmente resulta atractivo. Sin dudas llama la atenci贸n y se ha convertido en punto para fotograf铆as, especialmente para quienes desean llevarse una imagen simb贸lica de la ciudad.
Y realmente el cartel es hermoso.
Pero al mismo tiempo, el espacio cambi贸 su funci贸n.
El parqueo pr谩cticamente desapareci贸 y solo qued贸 una peque帽a zona lateral cerca de la entrada. Lo que antes serv铆a para que las familias llegaran, estacionaran sus autos y compartieran incluso al aire libre alrededor de algunas mesas, hoy es un 谩rea mucho m谩s limitada.
Y eso inevitablemente transforma la din谩mica del lugar.
Porque las ciudades no solo funcionan desde la est茅tica.
Tambi茅n desde el uso cotidiano.
Los bancos colocados all铆 casi siempre permanecen vac铆os bajo el fuerte sol cubano. El espacio luce ordenado, moderno incluso, pero transmite una sensaci贸n distinta. Menos espont谩nea. Menos viva.
Quiz谩s estas decisiones buscan modernizar la imagen urbana.
Y tal vez lo logran parcialmente.
Pero caminar por all铆 tambi茅n hace pensar en c贸mo a veces las ciudades ganan espacios visuales mientras pierden espacios funcionales.
Aun as铆, el mar sigue haciendo su parte.
La brisa contin煤a llegando.
Las olas todav铆a rompen contra las piedras.
Y desde ciertos puntos, Matanzas sigue pareciendo una ciudad que conversa constantemente con el agua.
Esta fue otra mirada.

Where the Sea Still Reaches You
This series is born from walking without haste and looking with intention.
After a short pause, the view returns to the Matanzas coastline, because in this city the sea always ends up appearing in one way or another.
Today I stopped at a place well known by those who for years searched for a space to relax and share time beside the water: La Costa.
More than just a restaurant, this place always had something special because of its location. It stands right next to the sea, in an area where the coastline drops several meters toward the rocks below and the waves break strongly against the shore. From there, you do not only see the sea.
You feel it.
The breeze arrives filled with salt.
Sometimes even small drops of water reach the people sitting nearby when the waves crash hard below.
There are places where the landscape simply accompanies you.
Here, the landscape is part of the experience.
For many years it was common to see families and groups of friends arriving, especially on weekends. The place had a large parking area that was also used by visitors going to nearby spaces such as La Sirenita, a well-known store in the area that also featured a second-floor terrace where many people gathered to talk, drink beer, and simply admire the sea.
Everything seemed connected as part of the same atmosphere.
Over the years, as happened with many other places in the city, the gastronomic offerings began to decline. The movement was no longer the same. Little by little, the place lost part of the vitality that once defined it and eventually closed temporarily for a recent renovation carried out by a private construction company.
The most visible change happened precisely in the area that used to serve as the parking lot.
There, they built a kind of small park with concrete walkways, benches, and a large Matanzas sign that is visually very attractive. Without a doubt, it catches attention and has become a popular spot for photographs, especially for those who want a symbolic image of the city.
And truly, the sign is beautiful.
But at the same time, the space changed its purpose.
The parking area practically disappeared, leaving only a small side section near the entrance. What once allowed families to arrive, park their cars, and even share time outdoors around a few tables is now a much more limited space.
And that inevitably changes the dynamics of the place.
Because cities do not function only through aesthetics.
They also function through everyday use.
The benches placed there often remain empty under the intense Cuban sun. The area looks organized, even modern, but it conveys a different feeling. Less spontaneous. Less alive.
Perhaps these decisions aim to modernize the urban image.
And maybe they partially succeed.
But walking through the area also makes you think about how cities sometimes gain visual spaces while losing functional ones.
Even so, the sea continues doing its part.
The breeze still arrives.
The waves still crash against the rocks.
And from certain points, Matanzas still feels like a city constantly in conversation with the water.
