Up Ukiah way is an out-of-the-ordinary attraction that has been there, already, quite some time. The "City of 10,000 Buddha's" has been providing a place for monks to gather in Northern California since 1976. That year they bought the property that had been the Mendocino State Hospital since 1889. it is the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere!
The jeweled hall of 10,000 Buddhas was finished in 1982 and houses a 20 foot statue of the God of Compassion. Over the course of some time, Hsuan Hua, the founder, created and painted 10,000 buddhas that adorn every inch of the walls!
For this lay person the place is a mix of uplifting energy and creepy 19th century insane asylum which leaves on with a certain sense of wonderment...
