Como ya se hab铆an ido todos y 茅l ten铆a las llaves, le sugiri贸 que se ba帽ase all铆, que 茅l le llevar铆a ropa limpia.
Snow was falling on the ground in New York City. People were rushing to get a gift to put under a Christmas tree. The cold that plagued the faces of those families coming in and out of different shopping malls was nothing compared to the frost that those who had nowhere to sleep had to endure.
It was believed that under these festive dates, the apparent goodness in each person resurfaced from their souls. Something that was not noticeable, because the poor man in his full shelter was still coughing and regretting being in this situation, feeling like a burden to society, someone who was left over. A person who had lost everything but not his dreams, so he decided to stay alive to, once and for all, make them come true.
People passed by ignoring his existence. Perhaps looking elsewhere so as not to feel any kind of guilt. Among those people Edgar was walking home after leaving the office where he worked until late at night. In his steps and with his thoughts focused on what they would have for dinner that night and who he would have to receive, he glimpsed on the side of the sidewalk a hand waving a can with a few coins.
Immediately Edgar was saddened to see this man, whose years were beginning to weigh him down, forgotten by the world, going cold and hungry without a single soul to contain his inner suffering. He asked him if he had a family that would be happy to see him again, that would take him with them. An answer that would crumple any heart was proclaimed between his words. "My family abandoned me and for years now I have been alone in this city."
Under this distressing situation, Edgar decided to commit himself to him. He told him that in that building which he pointed his finger looking up through his height, there were bathrooms with showers for the employees there. Since everyone had already left and he had the keys, he suggested that he should take a shower there, and that he would bring him some clean clothes. Something she nodded her head in agreement, perhaps out of embarrassment or for some other reason.
After that nice bath and change of clothes, the man looked at himself in the mirror and saw a renewed person who could still move forward in his life, and that it was a matter of persisting in those dreams that haunt the mind of a person with life, heart and soul. Tears soon came from both sides and it was the exact moment when the man broke free of himself and made his name known.
鈥擬y name is Atilio and I feel that I can still achieve my dreams. No one cared for me as much as you did 鈥攅xclaimed the homeless man.
It was clearly a remarkable breakthrough to see the reflection of hope and illusion in his eyes. They both came down from the building chatting about things they seemed to enjoy, in his case he loved basketball since he was a child, one of his favorite teams being the New York Knicks.
That night when New York families would celebrate Christmas, Atilio would be included, sharing a dinner in the warmth of a home. A bond so strong that he was considered part of the family for showing humility and gratitude.
Edgar thought about what would happen after that night, which he wished would never end. He would possibly return to his dark days, where for him the sun does not rise and the moon does not shine.
Having an important position in the company where he works, he decided to make some administrative maneuvers to grant him a dignified and well paid job. Atilio this time did not nod his head, but spoke with culture and security, accepting the position.
Christmas had already passed, even the year had changed. The days passed, the months passed, and a new Christmas was coming. Time to meet Atilio's daughter, this time in a beautiful context of family togetherness.
