Maybe you are right and it has to do with punishment in childhood, after all, many people tend to see the State in a paternalistic way, most of the things we do and the way we organize ourselves have to do with psychological needs that we have, although I wouldn't dare say that everything.
And this makes me think about the last thing you say, nobody really likes to be in a constant fight, it is difficult to be united when we differ because differences usually separate people, while similarity unites them, it's like the so-called law of likeness, like attracts like, or something like that.
