For a long time, I resisted watching this series that my family was so enthusiastic about; the thing is, I have never been a fan of science fiction, fantasy, or the paranormal. However, when I finally gave it a chance, I realized that *The Walking Dead* is much more than that—it depicts a dystopian world that, given recent real-world events, seems increasingly realistic. In the *Walking Dead* universe, the exact origin of the virus that triggered the pandemic remains unknown, but one thing is certain: the world would never be the same again.
Durante mucho tiempo me resistí a ver esta serie que a mi familia le entusiasmaba tanto, la cuestión es que nunca he sido fanático de la ciencia ficción, ni de lo fantástico o paranormal, pero cuando le di una oportunidad me di cuenta que The Walking Dead es mucho más que eso, se trata de un mundo distópico que, dado los más recientes acontecimientos en la realidad actual se vislumbra cada vez más realista. En el universo de The Walking Dead aún no se sabe con certeza como se originó el virus que desató la pandemia, pero sí se sabe que el mundo no volvería a ser el mismo.
Rick Grimes was the main protagonist for many seasons and was my favorite character because he was portrayed so realistically and humanly; he wasn't a perfect hero—quite the opposite. He often did questionable things (like when he abandoned a man on the side of the road) and made rash decisions, and there were times I felt like punching him. Yet, that is precisely what made him such a relatable character—his diverse and organic emotions. Furthermore, the actor's performance is simply superb, particularly in moments that touch upon the sensitive aspects of his character's fatherhood; we see him act exactly as a real father would.
Rick Grimmes fue el protagonista principal durante muchas temporadas y era mi personaje favorito por ser retratado de manera tan realista y humana, no se trataba de un héroe perfecto, al contrario, muchas veces hizo cosas cuestionables (como cuando dejó a un hombre abandonado en la carretera) tomó decisiones apresuradas y muchas veces sentí ganas de golpearlo, pero eso es lo que lo hacía precisamente un personaje tan cercano, sus emociones diversas y orgánicas, además la actuación del actor es simplemente soberbia, destacando especialmente en esos momentos donde se tocan las fibras más sensibles de la paternidad de su personaje, lo vemos actuar como un verdadero padre lo haría.
Carol is another character I deeply admire for her resilience and the way her development was handled—making her feel so authentic. She wasn't perfect, either; she made terrible mistakes that haunted her for a long time. Yet, the character is a product of everything she has been through: she rises to the occasion in the face of adversity and draws strength from her pain. She is protective, maternal, and sweet when she chooses to be, but she can also be a force that consumes everything in its path; she knows exactly how to manipulate others' emotions and uses that ability not only for her own benefit but for the good of her entire family.
Carol es otro de los personajes que más admiro por su entereza y desarrollo de personaje que además lo hicieron tan creíble… Carol tampoco era perfecta, ella llegó a cometer errores terribles que la atormentaron por mucho tiempo, pero el personaje es una mezcla de todo lo acontecido en su vida, ella se crece en la adversidad y toma fortaleza del dolor. Ella es protectora, maternal y dulce cuando quiere, pero también puede ser una ráfaga que consume todo a su paso, sabe muy bien como manipular las emociones de los demás y usa eso no solo a su favor sino a favor de toda su familia.
*The Walking Dead* teaches us that when the world seems to have gone to hell, people’s most depraved—or most human—emotions come to the fore (depending on the choice one makes): either acting cruelly by justifying it through one's own hardships or the need to survive, or simply fighting with everything one has, recognizing that there is strength in unity. The dystopian world presented by the series might seem like an exaggerated version of our own, but the truth is that it is not far off the mark; in both, the law of survival of the fittest prevails, and it seems the only way to survive in peace is to stay as far away from "civilization" as possible.
The Walking Dead nos enseña que cuando el mundo parece haberse ido al caño salen a relucir las emociones más perversas o humanas de las personas (depende de lo que decida elegir) ser cruel justificándote en tus carencias o en la supervivencia o simplemente luchar con todo reconociendo que en la unión está la fuerza. El mundo distópico que nos ofrece la serie podría parecer tal vez una versión exagerada del mundo actual pero lo cierto del caso es que no dista mucho de serlo, ya que en ambos impera la ley de supervivencia para el más fuerte y tal parece que la única manera de sobrevivir en paz es mantenerse tan alejado de la “civilización” como sea posible.
