I hope everyone is doing well. Today, I’d like to share a special family moment with you. I always love it when the whole family comes together to celebrate, and that’s exactly what we did recently for one of my brothers-in-law. Since it was his birthday, his daughter organized a small surprise gathering for him. It wasn't a flashy or boisterous affair—just us, his family, without loud music and with a soccer match playing in the background (since the World Cup was still in full swing). We chose to keep it low-key because, even though the national mourning period declared in Venezuela following the recent earthquakes had ended, no one felt like celebrating boisterously; the pain of that tragedy still lingered in the air.
Espero que todos estén bien, hoy vengo a compartir con ustedes un momento especial con la familia, siempre me gusta cuando la familia en pleno se une para celebrar, y eso fue lo que hicimos recientemente a propósito del cumpleaños de uno de mis concuñados, él cumplió años recientemente, así que su hija le organizó una pequeña celebración sorpresa, no sería algo ostentoso ni ruidoso, solo nosotros, su familia, sin música alta y con un partido de futbol como telón de fondo (ya que aún estaba en boga el mundial) decidimos hacerlo así porque a pesar de que ya se había levantado el luto nacional que decretaron en Venezuela por causa de los terremotos que hubo recientemente, nadie quería celebrar con algarabía, el dolor de esa tragedia aún orbita en el aire.
But our intention wasn't to be sad—quite the opposite: we wanted to celebrate life and pay a small tribute to my brother-in-law. He is one of those people who is always there when you need him most; he has been through many difficult situations, so we wanted him to have a truly great and well-deserved time. We brought along some canapés, soft drinks, and, of course, the cake.
Pero nuestra intención tampoco era estar tristes sino todo lo contrario, celebrar la vida y hacer un pequeño homenaje a mi concuñado quién es de esas personas que siempre está ahí cuando más lo necesitas, él ha pasado por muchas situaciones difíciles, así que nuestra intención era que pasara un muy buen y merecido momento. Llevamos algunos canapés, refrescos y desde luego el pastel.
The best part of this is reconnecting with people you care about deeply but haven't seen in a long time, as it allows you to share experiences and catch up on conversations. Gatherings like these always bring up old anecdotes alongside current topics, giving us a chance to share our views. I truly love seeing the family together like this—even if it’s only occasionally. Of course, there are some family members who aren't in the country, but whenever they come to visit, it brings us great joy—and, why not? It’s yet another reason to celebrate.
Lo más bonito de esto es reencontrarte con esas personas que aprecias mucho pero que tienes tiempo que no ves, porque eso te permite compartir experiencias y ponerte al día con las conversaciones. En reuniones como estas siempre salen a relucir viejas anécdotas pero también los temas actuales y compartimos opiniones. De verdad me gusta ver a la familia reunida así, aunque sea de vez en cuando, y bueno, también faltan algunos miembros de la familia que no están en el país, pero cada vez que vienen de visita para nosotros es una gran alegría y ¿por qué no? Un motivo más de celebración.
Finally, we sang "Happy Birthday," cut the cake, and settled in to enjoy it amidst pleasant conversation. The canapés were delicious—the kind typically served at Venezuelan parties, such as *tequeños*—though on this occasion, I was pleased to try a different variety (filled with sausage, in addition to the traditional cheese-filled ones).
Finalmente cantamos la canción de cumpleaños, cortamos el pastel y nos dedicamos a disfrutarlo en medio de amenas conversaciones, los canapés estaban deliciosos, son los típicos que se sirven en las fiestas venezolanas: tequeños, pero en esta ocasión me complació hacer probado unos diferentes (rellenos de salchicha además de los tradicionales tequeños rellenos de queso)
