A friend had told me that she makes a homemade cough syrup with fresh thyme. I asked him to give me the recipe and I decided to make such a syrup this year.
I picked fresh thyme from our garden.
I prepared a large glass jar.
I began to fill the jar with a single row of thyme, which I had previously soaked briefly in a bowl of water.
I alternated a row of thyme and a row of sugar.
And so until I filled the entire jar, ending with the thyme.
Then I tightly closed the jar and left it in a sunny place for a month. I turned the jar every now and then to let the sugar dissolve.
After 1 month I strained the liquid through cheesecloth and rinsed the thyme with water and strained through cheesecloth again.
I put the resulting juice on the stove and leave it on the fire to harden slightly, being careful not to boil.
So I made my first homemade thyme cough syrup.
I poured the finished liquid into glass bottles and left them for storage in the refrigerator.
We will use it for mild colds, for coughs and sore throats. Drink (for adults) 1 tsp. per day.
