Hello Scrobbles, this is my first post in this community. I'm happy to participate and contribute with this first post, which is my review of Spawn #143. This is one of the issues where Todd McFarlane's influence is evident in the plot, with art by Angel Medina and a pretty good inking team, as well as coloring by Brian Haberlin. This issue tells the story of Spawn versus the Redeemer under Mammon's manipulation. I don't want to give an introduction to the Spawn story in general because it would be too much, so let's get to the review.

An issue with little noise

Spawn comics have always seemed a bit noisy to me; that is, the panels contain too much information, and sometimes the reading gets lost because of so many things happening. This issue, in particular, has a fairly simple sequential narrative when it comes to telling the important dialogues regarding Mammon's exposed betrayal and what happens when Al returns from his mission. There are indeed Spawn issues that I found difficult to read because of how noisy the pages were, and I appreciate the simple and sequential narrative presented in this issue, even for the action scenes. And simple doesn't mean without impact; it means that our eye is comfortably guided through the sequence, like a movie. Many manga are especially good at this.

Direct and spectacular action.

In the story, we see Spawn face the Redeemer when he remembers his oath to protect Nyx, and it is here that Angel Medina's pencils do their work, creating an incredibly legible, agile, fast-paced, violent, and action-packed sequence, where we appreciate and feel every punch, every kick, in open panels of a page combined with vertical panels that complement what is happening in the battle extremely well. This is undoubtedly one of the issues I enjoy more for its art than for its narrative.

The intensity of the battle also allows for greater appreciation. In this case, the battle is quite warm in terms of color, clear, not filled with dark colors that sometimes overshadow Spawn's own darkness due to the heavy atmosphere. Here, we clearly appreciate the details of Al Simmons' suit. I think Brian Haberlin's work with the color is truly remarkable.

Is issue 143 worth it?

Well, if you want to follow the Spawn saga, it's a really important issue because it solidifies how it acts as the climax of the betrayal and the consolidation of Mammon as the true mastermind of that era. So, it's a crucial issue narratively. Personally, I don't own all the Spawn comics; I have this one and a few others. I've tried to learn the story over time by reading a bit of everything, but in terms of art and sequential storytelling, it's one of my favorites. Everything works: the inks, lettering and colors, the action, the narrative pace.

The cover is, for me, one of the best and most iconic in comics. The character in that form, with just a black background like a logo—but a logo that's alive—is simply brutal. It's very metal; you can almost hear the heavy metal it's made of, not literally, but visually it's very heavy and well-crafted. So, if you like comics and appreciate comic book art, this is an issue I highly recommend. It's been a pleasure, and I'll see you in the next post.

Uno de los números donde Todd McFarlane mete su mano en la trama con los dibujos de Angel Medina y un equipo de tinta bastante bueno al igual que el color por Brian Haberlin. En este numero se cuenta la historia de Spawn versus el Redentor bajo la manipulación de Mammon. No quiero hacer una introduction a la historia de Spawn en general porque sería demasiado, sin embargo, vayamos al review.

Un numero con poco ruido

Los comic de Spawn siempre me han parecido un poco ruidosos, es decir, los paneles contienen demasiada información y a veces la lectura se pierde por tantas cosas que suceden, este numero en especial tiene una narrativa secuencial bastante simple al momento de narrar los importantes dialogos referente a la traicion expuesta de Mammon y lo que sucede cuando Al llega de su mision. Realmente hay numeros de Spawn que me costo leer por lo ruidosa que eran las paginas y agradezco la secuencia narrativa y siemple presentada en este numero, incluso para las escenas de acción. Y simple no significa que sin impacto, significa que nuestro ojo es llevado comodamente pro la secuencia, como una pelicula, muchos manga, son especialmente buenos en esto.

Una acción directa y espectacular.

En la historia vemos que Spawn se enfrenta al Redentor cuando este recuerda su juramento de proteger a Nyx y es aquí cuando los lápices de Angel Medina hacen su trabajo creando una secuencia de acción increíblemente legible, ágil, rápida, violenta y cargada de acción, donde apreciamos y sentimos cada puñetazo, cada patada, en paneles abiertos de una pagina combinando paneles verticales que complementan extremadamente bien lo que esta sucediendo en la batalla. Este es sin duda uno de los números que más disfruto como arte que por narrativa.


La colorización de la batalla también es algo que permite que se aprecie más, en este caso, la batalla es bastante cálida a nivel de color, clara, no esa llena de colores oscuros que a veces suelen opacar la propia oscuridad de Spawn por lo pesado que termina siendo el entorno, en este caso, apreciamos claramente los detalles del traje de Al Simmons, creo que el trabajo que hace Brian Haberlin con el color es realmente para apreciar.

Vale la pena el numero 143?

Bueno si quieres seguir la saga de Spawn es un número que realmente importa porque consolida como actúa como el clímax de la traición y la consolidación de Mammon como la verdadera mente maestra de esa era. Entonces es un numero crucial a nivel narrativo.

Personalmente no tengo todos los comics de Spawn, tengo este y algunos otros, y he tratado de conocer la historia a lo largo del tiempo leyendo un poco de cada lado, sin embargo a nivel de arte y narrativa secuencial es uno de mis favoritos, todo funciona, las tintas, letras y colores, la acción, la velocidad narrativa, la portada es para mí una de las mejores y más míticas del comic, el personaje en esa forma, solo con el fondo negro como un logo pero un logo que está vivo, es sencillamente brutal, es muy metalera, puedes escuchar el heavy metal que se la de ella, no literalmente, pero visualmente es muy pesada y bien trabajada. Así que bueno si te gusta el comic, y disfrutar del arte del comic es un número que te recomiendo bastante. Ha sido un placer y nos vemos en un próximo post.
