Mission #6: Ballistic Engine. New armor and much more in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2
How's it going, my dear HIVE gamers? I hope you're all doing great, because we're continuing our Warhammer saga, and this time we're tackling mission number 6: Ballistic Engine, where we have to wipe out a Xenos swarm that's invaded the hive city of AVRAAX. Once we free up the explosive, we'll need to deploy the charge into the Nova Cannon in order to detonate the whole thing and take out as many Tyranids as possible.
Refining weapons and armor at the armory
Before heading out, I wanted to change up the look of my armor, taking advantage of the items included in the DLCs that come with the first year's battle pass purchase. It's honestly nice to finally see some of that content showing up properly, especially after I complained a bit about the DLC situation not displaying correctly a few posts back. This time around, swapping pieces in and out felt a lot smoother, and I got to put together a look I'm actually proud of, mixing some of those battle pass cosmetics with pieces I'd already unlocked through regular progression.
On top of the cosmetics, I've also been slowly unlocking masteries and skill tree abilities to improve my performance out in the field. The weapon I've used the most by far is the plasma rifle, and it just reached its second tier of evolution, which honestly makes a noticeable difference. The damage output feels meaningfully higher now, and some of the handling quirks I had to work around early on have smoothed out a lot. Spending time in the armory between missions has become one of those little rituals I genuinely enjoy, tweaking loadouts, checking what new mastery perks I can unlock next, and figuring out which combination of gear fits the kind of mission I'm about to walk into.
Advancing toward the Militarum Barracks
Once I was geared up and ready, it was time to push toward the Militarum Barracks, and this stretch wastes no time throwing you straight into the chaos. The hive city itself is an incredible backdrop for this mission, towering structures, industrial walkways, and that constant sense of scale this game nails so well, all while Tyranids pour out from every direction trying to overwhelm you before you even reach the barracks.
The fighting here feels different from some of the earlier missions, since you're moving through tighter industrial corridors packed with cover, forcing you to think more carefully about positioning instead of just running and gunning through open plazas. Enemies ambush from side passages, drop down from broken walkways above, and generally keep you on edge the entire way there. By the time the barracks finally comes into view, you can already tell this mission isn't holding back on action, and that's exactly what you want going into something this ambitious.
Loading and holding out until the engine charges
Once inside, we reach a point where we have to load the charge and hold our ground while the engine slowly builds up enough power to fire. This is where the mission really starts testing your endurance. Waves of Tyranids throw themselves at your position nonstop, trying to interrupt the charging sequence, and you end up constantly managing your positioning, your ammo, and your cooldowns just to keep the line from breaking.
This kind of hold-and-defend sequence has become something of a signature for this game by this point, and honestly, it never gets old. There's a real sense of mounting pressure as the charge bar creeps up, and you start doing that familiar mental math, how many enemies are left in this wave, how much longer until the engine's ready, can I afford to pop my ultimate now or should I save it for the next surge. Add in the sheer number of enemies swarming the area at once, and you get one of those stretches where the chaos on screen looks incredible without the gameplay ever feeling unfair or overwhelming in a frustrating way.
Restoring the power supply and defending the charging station
With the engine finally loaded, we then have to restore the power supply and defend the charging station while everything stabilizes. This section ramps things up even further, since now you're not just holding one position, you're bouncing between repairing the power feed and fending off enemies trying to sabotage the whole operation from multiple angles.
The charging station itself becomes this focal point that practically every surviving Tyranid in the area seems determined to destroy, so the fighting here gets dense fast. It's the kind of sequence where teamwork, if you're playing with others, really starts to matter, since someone needs to keep an eye on the power feed while everyone else holds the perimeter. Even solo, though, it's manageable as long as you stay aware of your surroundings and don't get tunnel-visioned chasing kills instead of protecting the objective. Visually, this section is also one of the standouts of the mission, with electrical arcs flying everywhere, sparks raining down from damaged machinery, and the hive city's industrial backdrop glowing under all that chaos.
The final push: launching the train
So, gamers, once all of this is done, that's the last thing we need to do before launching the train straight into the hive city and blowing absolutely everything sky high. Watching that entire sequence play out is a genuinely satisfying payoff after everything leading up to it, the buildup through the barracks, the tense engine charge, and the chaotic defense of the power station all culminate in this massive, explosive finale that perfectly closes out the mission.
Nothing more to say except that this has been a brutal mission packed with action and some genuinely memorable scenery along the way. Between the new armor pieces I finally got to show off, the plasma rifle hitting its second evolution tier, and a mission this intense and well put together, this has easily been one of my favorite entries in the PvE lineup so far. I'm excited to keep pushing through the rest of these missions and to keep seeing what new gear and upgrades show up along the way. See you in a next post, gamers!
