Today I would like to talk about the water-rich Carambola AKA Starfruit, Latin name Averrhoa carambola.
The carambola is planted throughout the tropics, but originates from mostly Asia. It is nicknamed "starfruit" for its shape. When it's cut vertically, it has the shape of a star.

The starfruit is a delicious, water-rich fruit that has a crisp bite (some varieties like the Arkin) and a sweet aroma and flavor.

If you live in the bottom half of Florida (including Tampa, possibly Orlando) you have a great chance at being able to grow this magnificent fruit. A mature starfruit tree can produce up to 450 lbs. of fruit per year. This is a vegan or fruitarian's dream!
