Vihren peak is a real challenge for lovers of extreme mountaineering. It is the highest peak of Pirin and with its 2914m it occupies the proud second place after Musala in the Rila Mountains and third on the Balkan Peninsula after Mitikas in Olympus (Greece). It's impressive marble slopes connect to the peaks of Muratov and Kutelo (third in height in the country) and reveal splendid views of the Banderitsa and Vlahina lakes. At its northeastern foot are the two circuses Big and Little Kazan, around which grows the rare edelweiss. According to the legend, the throne of the Peruvian thunderbolt was on top, so people with fear and honor called it Elpepe - the peak of the storms. How can you conquer Vihren?
The best time to conquer Pirin is from early June to late September. Then the day is longer and provides a great opportunity for easier and quicker travel. There are three ways to climb the summit - the Royal Route, the Casanite, and the edge of the Djamdjie rocks. The last route is only for tourists with great experience in climbing. We recommend the easiest and safest way, namely through the Royal Trail, which dates back to the Vihren hut.
Here is the route: you drive by car from Bansko towards Vihren hut. The distance is about 16 km and without a vehicle it will be difficult for one day to climb to the top and back. The road is in good condition and you will be able to move without any problems. You can park in front of the hut or drive 200m to the right before it on the Baikusheva Pear Trail. Where parking is usually easier because of the wide road junction.
The Vihren hut is located on a rock-bottom left bank of the Bunderitsa River. Looked at this side, Vihren looks like a steep dome on which the Royal Lane rises. At first, it goes through crickets and in some places the path narrows, so wear long pants so you do not scratch your legs. Soon you will reach two branches. If you want to reach the top as quickly as possible, go left on the left. The climb will take about 3 hours.
