Bird Box(2018) is a post-apocalyptic psychological movie , directed by Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes. Bird box is a psychological thriller that explored the theme of survival, motherhood and the natural instinct possessed by humans to protect those they love. The movie is about an apocalyptic world, where looking at a horrific creature could lead a person to commit suicide, this creature can't be seen but its presence can be felt and lures the person into being suicidal.
The movie follows the story of Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes, a pregnant artist who enjoys her company and dislikes connecting with the outside world, but everything changed when this mysterious creature invaded the world and made society collapse and changed the life of everyone.
Malorie found shelter with a group of survivors and, while trying to survive, most died, while others learnt to survive in a world where their eyes had to be sealed and closed to avoid a psychological reaction that could make them hate themselves so much to commit suicide. Their survival in a world like this, requires more than food and shelter, also they must avoid looking outside, seal their eyes and not permit strangers in their midst.
One of these movies greatest strengths for me is the tension and suspense. A horrific movie without an actual monster. They kept the viewers imagination action that they could sense when the creature and danger approached. I never saw this creature or know what it looks like, but can always tell when it's present. A very simple act of taking off a blindfold created tension and suspense, because it's the greatest threat and exposure to the creature and this went on till the end of this movie.
Sandra Bullock did a very great job in this movie. She embodied her character perfectly. Her character started as a woman who doesn't want to connect with people, stays isolated and emotionally distant, but as this movie went on, survival and motherhood made her learn to connect. Even with her children, connection was hard. She couldn't even give them a name because that would make her connect more. She called them Boy and Girl and was always harsh, regardless of her harsh expression. She also was a protective mom who took risks to protect her kids and keep them alive.
Malorie and her children must take a journey to safety, they must travel blindfolded to where they can find safety and this scene is metaphoric for facing an unpredictable and uncertain future, without knowledge of what lies ahead of you.
This movie also shows that courage doesn't eliminate fear. Even in fear, you just have to be courageous and fearless.
Bird Box, like many post-apocalyptic movies that I have watched, also left some questions unanswered. The performance of the cast was excellent, and this movie allows the viewers to be part of the horror and fear and that was achieved because the actual threat was made mysterious and invisible to the viewers. The movie is unpredictable, especially realizing that only the blind can survive in such a world.
Ultimately, Bird Box (2018) is really a tense, emotional and thought provoking movie/ thriller that explores a post-apocalyptic world, combines horror, a fight to survive and motherhood. The uncertainty and suspense in this movie is one of it greatest strength. Bird box achieves it aim of being entertaining and shows how terrifying the unknown can be.
I will be rating the movie Bird Box (2018 ) 80/ 100.
