A Lathe machine is a machine used to shape, carve or chip a metal, wood or any other material in a desired shape.
There are different types of Lathe machine but we will talk about 2 of them.
1.The CNC
2.The metal lathe
So i decided to do a little experiment with the metal lathe machine to fully understand what it is being used for. I took a metal rod and carefully placed it in the spindle, made sure it was locked and then turned on the machine.
My aim is to cut a metal rod of
length is 120mm
Diameter is 37mm
depth of cut must be 0.5mm
The first step is facing
mixture of soluble oil plus water as the coolant.
the fragments coming out is known as chip.
Equipment:
1.Cutting tool.
2.Hss high speed stir.
joining the cutting tool and base material.
if the coolant and the cutting material isn't properly placed, the material will be cutting the cutting material.
We use CNC to produce intricate shape.
The lathe machine will be chipping away the metal gradually.
The machines are made by moulding,
Step 3 turning down to diameter 37 at 120mm
Always remember to disengage the tools before shutting down the machine , else it will break the cutting tool or blunt it. firstly remove the tool from cutting , pull it back before shutting down.
next step is to reduce the diameter to 30 at a distance of 82.5mm
The transverse allows you to face the material
U cut using a parting tool at a distance 60mm and 20mm.
Kept going layer by layer, gradually shaping the metal
When i got to the desired shape of the metal i wanted, like i said before i had to remove the cutting tool from the cutting base material first before shutting down the engine.
Then i released the material from the spindle and tool it to the power saw for cutting out the material
When the power saw was done, i shut it down and dropped the piece of metal on the table, i left it at workshop.
My primary concern was learning how to operate the machine and not necessarily with the metal piece.
So when i was done i left in hungry because it was already late.
I discover that using the metal lathe, to avoid mistakes of not getting the desired shape you wish , you can choose to set your cutting tool and lock it so the cutting tool will give you the desired and smooth shape you wish. To avoid you going thro and fro.
Also the metal has a driller on the other end of it were if you wish to drill a hole through your metal rod or anything at all, you could attach it and do your magic.
Also there are alot of safety measures and sensors on the machine to keep you as safe as possible.
