This is very important question and from my point of view you can very well say the world is overpopulated with a staggering 7.9 billion human beings on earth and growing, not to mention the animals and other inventions like cars and all that are being stacked up.
Overpopulation is when a certain geographical area or world at large is hosting or housing more lives than it can carry.
Birth control:
With the increase number of humans we have in the world, birth control would be the first step to reduce the number of infants we bring into the world.
Pass a bill that the whole world would adhere is to one family having not morethan 2 or 3 children at most. Not going on a borning spree like you are competing with anyone and at the end of the day the streets will filled with no job for everyone and killing the planet slowly.
We have a major problem of running out of oxygen if we continue cutting and burning bushes for building and all without planting more. Trees are the major contributors to the air we breathe. If there are no trees to absorb our carbon dioxide we exhale then the air will become toxic, making it impossible for living things to survive.
Nature is already playing it's role but helping us to thin down the population.
Searching for another inhabitable planet, that is project many countries and wealthy individuals such as Elon musk and his company space x, NASA and other agencies has been trying to explore the universe in search of other life forms, other planets that could be condusive for humans to live in.
They have found many planets but none has the same characteristics as earth, water mostly is a problem, where there is no water and vegetation there can't be oxygen there.
I believe in no distant time they will surely come up with a break through, which would aide space travelling and possibly relocating people to another planet that is safe like earth where they can start a new life and reproduction processes.
All these and many more could help out planet and us most importantly to survive.
If proper precautions are not taken and on time, the earth will definitely fail if the population keeps increasing which it will if nothing is done anytime soon.
It is going to cause the biggest problem in human history and probably extinction, because we can't survive without oxygen and water. When we cut down all the trees in the world to build our houses and farms. There won't be none left to give us vegetation then we are doomed.
