It's been over two months since I started university, I'm barely in my first semester and in the short time I've been in the wonderful career I chose I've realized many things that I previously overlooked, but once I experienced them firsthand my perspective changed a lot. I chose to be a music teacher, as everyone knows that profession in Venezuela is not well paid since a teacher's salary is $2 per month (which with inflation is not enough for anything) and even so with the cadence of the educational system, education has tried to stay afloat as best it can in recent years.
Many people close to me criticized me a lot when they found out about my decision, but the decision was made and I wasn't going to back out. As the months went by, I realized that being a teacher is much more than teaching classes, more than just a salary; it goes beyond many things. It's about educating, promoting, and guiding the future of the country. A very great responsibility lies in the hands of the teacher. Just as a doctor has the responsibility to save lives, the teacher has the responsibility to guide and create citizens. It's not an easy task, even less so living in Venezuela, but it's necessary.
Teaching is a profession that goes beyond; it's a service that the deeper you delve into its waters, the more you find challenges, life lessons that mark you, and students of all kinds. Since the day I entered my university, I began teaching classes and have encountered quite thoughtful and painful cases: children without parents, feeling guilty for their abandonment, students who love music but lack the means to study it, 7-year-olds who only bring rice and nothing else to school, among many other things that break my heart in two with pain and helplessness since I can't do much for those children except give my best in the classroom. And those are precisely things that not everyone sees about this profession, how much it destroys you and forges you at the same time, not all teachers accept the important role they once took on when choosing this profession, since we have the future of the country in our hands, in our classrooms, that is why it is so important to have good teacher training and do things perfectly, since it will depend on how we teach those children who are sitting in the desks where the future professionals are, future doctors, lawyers, teachers, leaders, and guiding them is an extremely important job where failures do not exist and cannot exist.
I've learned a lot from my new teachers. Each one shapes me differently, but they all have one thing in common: the demands and pressure they place on us, as our path requires. One of the phrases I have engraved in my mind and heart is: "You, teachers in training, are the future, of the future." And it's definitely true. More than a profession, being a teacher is a duty, a service, a way of life鈥攏ecessary for the development of society, and in my opinion, vital for its change.
