Is watching movies a sin? | The Old Path

Bible references: 1John 2:15, 2 Corinthians 11:3

Movies play a major influence in society. As human beings, we are highly influenced by the things we see. The things we see frequently have a way of shaping our minds and our behavior as well. We have to be careful about the movies we watch. Every movie we watch affects us one way or another.

Not all movies should be watched. The devil uses various instruments and mechanisms of the world to deceive people. We fully know that the things of the world can be of detriment to us if we let them get a hold of us. Let's glance through a scripture in the Bible:

1John.2.15 - Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Movies can be one of the channels the devil can use to penetrate into the hearts of men. We should be on alert concerning these vices. Many people develop certain characters as a result of the type of movies they watch constantly. As kids, the kinds of movies they watch while growing can have a great effect on them.

We often come across movies with age restrictions. Such movies have negative impacts on our minds, especially kids below the age limit. Every movie we watch is aimed at influencing the way our minds reason.

2Corinthians 11.3 - But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

The devil succeeded in corrupting the mind of Eve by conversing with her. Today, the devil uses many other means to converse with us, which could lead to corrupting our minds. God's will for us is to possess a simple mind and a pure heart. One void of corruption.

God wants us to have a heart like that of a baby. Another disadvantage of getting engrossed in watching movies is that it distracts us from our responsibilities as Christians. It can also distract us from various other individual responsibilities. A serious and dedicated person lacks adequate time to watch movies.

And even if they watch, they make sure to consume only movies that would add something positive to their lives. Any movie that doesn't do this should be set aside.
