Ambos no podían creerlo todavía.

—¿A qué te dedicas, Simón?

—Soy pintor, ¿y usted?

—¿Camille?

—¿Simón?

No hubo ninguna respuesta.

Flee from wars, for it is less a feeling to suffer their terror
to suffer their terror than their chastisement.

— Lucano

Like the flash of a memory that can last for hours in the mind. In an instant where time forgot its power. Within the cold walls of space in Paris, a man and a woman experienced something never to be repeated. The echoes were represented by moans and shuddering words that defied time. Simon and Camille were afraid at first, but it all ended in a story they will never forget.

He was a man with red hair and an elongated face. His deep-set eyes and deep voice represented him to the others. He lived in Paris in 1900; a time of wonders, industrial revolutions, and artists. He resided in an apartment where he could glimpse downtown, with the recently erected Eiffel Tower in the background blocking out the sun. A painter crowded by unbearable loneliness. Art alone was his purpose; his way of subsisting. Liquor was his strength and kept him on his feet, tracing his creations on virgin canvases.

In the same city, in the same building, in the same apartment, but 120 years later, lived Camille trying to start a new life. She came from Toulouse to become a successful journalist. She was intelligent, young, determined, and shrewd. Living in Paris had always been her dream and she had finally fulfilled it.

She bought the apartment with the money her father left her before he died and, every time she looked out of the window, she was enraptured by the beautiful view of the center of Paris. Camille was very formal, exclusive, and serious in her affairs. It was not in her plans to find love, but success and prosperity. She liked solitude; having her own private space with no one to disturb her. And occasionally, when desire whispered to her, she sought pleasure in men who meant nothing to her.

Two souls who found themselves entangled in an irrational situation, for one night, time decided to break one of their threads. Camille had arrived tired from a job opportunity in which much was demanded of her. Simon had worked so hard on paint orders that his hands became numb and his eyesight blurred with alcohol.

It was on the same date, but at different times. It was the same hour when the same moon appeared. The temporal became timeless, and the same night chill of different times crept across the floor, the walls, and the ceiling. Camille lay on the left side of the bed, and from her right side, she heard the loud sound of a sigh. She sat up in mild agitation and looked to her side; she couldn't help but perceive the idea of a presence.

Simon did the same, his eyes became two huge saucers. He looked around as if someone was there accompanying him, he felt afraid at first, but then he began to think it was the effect of the alcohol.

-Who is there? -he muttered in fear.

Camille heard clearly and got out of bed. "This must be exhaustion," she muttered, not knowing that, on the other side, Simon was listening to her.

-Do I hear a voice? I'm not drunk enough, am I? -Simon asked in a low tone of voice.

Camille started to panic, turned on the light, and checked under the bed and the closet; she was alone.

-Who are you? Where are you?- asked Camille in desperation. Simon was astonished but decided to continue with the passing circumstance.

-My name is Simon,- he said, his voice more fluid, " -I can't see you, miss, but for some reason, I can hear you, tell me, are you a ghost?

Camille was a little amused by that absurd question, but she was still a little scared.

-No, I'm not. My name is Camille; by the way, where are you and why can't I see you?

Simon fell silent before answering.

-I don't know, miss, I wish I had an answer for you.
-Your accent and the way you speak are strange as if you came from another era. Camille deduced.

-Yours also seems irregular to me. I live in the year 1900, here in Paris, don't you?

Camille blanched at the answer.

-I... I live in the year 2020, also in Paris. Is this real?

They both still couldn't believe it. They scratched their heads and tried to conclude, and as the hours passed, they began to get to know each other better and started to like each other more.

-What do you do, Simon?

-I'm a painter, and you?

-I work as a newspaper assistant, for the moment.

The conversation was rising and with it came laughter and good anecdotes. Camille had never had such a long and affable conversation with anyone in her life, let alone someone from another era. The same was true of Simon, for his rigorous work kept him away from people.

-What are you like physically? -Camille asked, anxious to know, but before Simon could answer, everything descended into stony silence. They no longer felt each other and the moon stopped illuminating the room.

-Camille?

-Simon?

There was no answer. They went to sleep stunned, trying to think that it was all a dream; a product of alcohol and tiredness. The next day, everything went normally. Camille got ready for work, while Simon continued his work early.

Night came again, and the huge moon reappeared in the Paris of both eras. Both Camille and Simon looked around the room with hope. She wanted to hear him again, even come to one more request. He wanted to feel her presence, at least, to hear the anecdotes of her life and how she felt.

The moon cast glares that lit the room in clicks, and the whole atmosphere began to change again.

-Camille? -Simon shouted with joy in his voice.

She looked up and a smile broke out on her face. -You're here! - she exclaimed happily, and they resumed the conversation of the night before.

They always had something to tell each other: a story, an encounter, an event about their lives or their family. The chatter never stopped, until Camille stretched out on the bed and looked across.

-Simon, would I like to touch you? - Camille bit her lips.

-I think... if we can hear each other, we could easily touch each other too, do you want us to try? -Simon suggested. Camille answered in the affirmative.

They gave each other directions. They reached out their hands for each other until they touched their cheeks. Then they moved up to her hair, doing it tenderly and gently.

-Your hair is straight, what color is it? -Simon asked.

-It's brown. Yours is curly, is it dark?

-It's red.- Simon affirmed, as he went down other parts of Camille's face.

-Your nose is upturned. Your lips are thin. Your forehead is perfect, worthy to be painted in watercolors.

Camille smiled. She was amazed at how descriptive a painter could be.

They moved much closer. They began to sniff each other and feel more intimate. They didn't know when this spell would end, or if it would be the last time they could talk to each other and touch. They undressed each other. They licked each other. They nibbled. They sucked each other. Though they couldn't see each other, they knew where to touch to pleasure each other.

Sweet moans broke the silence. The silver lights of the night changed as the ecstasy rose. After the passionate instant, the timeless rivers left the room and all turned to silence again.

They have saddened again, for they were uncertain if they would meet again tomorrow, but fortunately, things did not end there. Many more nights they met again, melting in love and passion. Willing to each other, they stopped to love each other more.

-I would like to see you, Camille. Simon said anxiously, while they were intertwined.

-If we can touch each other, feel each other, hold each other, and listen to each other, I think we could see each other too, do you want us to try?

Simon smiled and they both closed their eyes at the same time. The moon began to flicker again. Its airs entered the room again and changed everything. Camille was in Simon's time now. She opened her eyes and was surprised that she could now see him, and he was her. They kissed more passionately than before and rested in front of the window.

Paris looked even more beautiful, giving off faint and diverse colors accompanied by descending stars. Camille and Simon, holding hands, leaped from the window and both fell lightly like feathers over the city. The colors were swirling around them, but the instant in which the timelessness was broken began and everything returned to normal.

They laughed on the bed, they thought that every day would be the same, but the next night, they did not meet again. They never heard, felt, or dreamed again. Time pulled the threads back together, leaving everything as it should be.

Melancholy settled in their hearts, and broken, they became pools of tears. Time passed and Camille achieved her goal of becoming a well-paid columnist, while Simon was increasingly recognized for his artistic work.

After a year, they still remembered each other with love. They longed for each other. They longed to at least listen to each other, and the desire was so great that, as the quiet took over the room, they both heard the echo of their sighs again.
