The Reading will not be recognized for being an iconic film in the slasher horror genre, but it has interesting points that I would like to address in this review. With a different plot, mixing supernatural, insanity, tangible danger and a sequence that for me didn't miss a beat, this film directed by Courtney Glaude was entertaining, but without crossing the line into the extraordinary.
Glaude, for a new filmmaker, has creative ideas. He wrote The Reading thinking about his characters as Jordan Peele would. With this film he shows us that he can do better things with a better budget and better prepared dialogue, and that would have much more impact on the scenes for us viewers.
In the plot of this story, we will have as the main character Emma Leeden (Mo'Nique) a married woman with two children. At the beginning of the movie, we see that she seems to be happy with the life she has, and while she is in her kitchen preparing dinner, four strange men break into her house and kill the rest of her family; leaving her as the only survivor with serious injuries.
The Reading no será reconocida por ser una película icónica en el género de terror slasher, pero tiene puntos interesantes que me gustaría tratar en esta reseña. Con una trama diferente, mezclando lo sobrenatural, la locura, lo tangible del peligro y una secuencia que para mí no se perdió en ningún momento, esta película dirigida por Courtney Glaude fue entretenida, pero sin pasar la raya hacia lo extraordinario.
Glaude, para ser un director de cine nuevo, tiene ideas creativas. Escribió The Reading pensando en sus personajes como lo haría Jordan Peele. Con este filme nos demuestra que puede hacer mejores cosas con un mejor presupuesto y diálogos mejor preparados, y que tendrían mucho más impacto en las escenas para nosotros los espectadores.
En la trama de esta historia, tendremos como protagonista a Emma Leeden (Mo'Nique) una mujer casada con dos niños. Al principio de la película, vemos que ella parece estar feliz con la vida que tiene, y mientras está en su cocina preparando la cena, cuatro hombres extraños se meten en su casa y matan al resto de su familia; quedando ella como la única sobreviviente con graves heridas.
Emma, as the only living witness to the event, writes a book about what happened that night called "The Invasion", which later becomes very popular, as it is a true story. To give her book much more publicity, Emma hires Sky (Chasity Sereal), a girl with psychic abilities that allow her to communicate with the dead. She, along with her boyfriend Gregory (Ian Haywood) and her friends Jessie (Denisha Hardeman) and Randy (Mcauley Teters), go to Emma's house to perform "the reading" so the widow can communicate with her family.
The film honestly doesn't impress you; only in a couple of loud sounds that don't impact at all. The cinematography, in general, is unremarkable. You can tell that the film has a very low budget, with which, I think, something with more impact could have been created. The camera play is very important in suspense; I've seen low budget films with better angles, and that on top of that made me jump in my chair. Here I didn't feel any of that, therefore, the film fails.
I was expecting more interesting things to happen in the part where the séance takes place; and I won't lie, there are, but you're more hooked by the curiosity of what will happen next than by a well-crafted suspense.
Emma, como única testigo viva del suceso, escribe un libro sobre lo sucedido esa noche llamado “La invasión”, el cual se vuelve muy popular después, ya que se trata de una historia real. Para darle mucha más publicidad a su libro, Emma contrata a Sky (Chasity Sereal), una chica con habilidades psíquicas que le permiten comunicarse con los muertos. Ella, junto con su novio Gregory (Ian Haywood) y sus amigos Jessie (Denisha Hardeman) y Randy (Mcauley Teters), van a la casa de Emma para realizarse “la lectura” y así la viuda pueda comunicarse con su familia.
La película sinceramente no te impresiona; solo en un par de sonidos fuertes que no impactan en lo absoluto. La fotografía, en general, no tiene nada de extraordinario. Se nota que la película tiene un presupuesto muy bajo, con el cual pienso, que se pudo haber creado algo con más impacto. El juego de la cámara es muy importante en el suspenso; he visto películas de bajo presupuesto con mejores ángulos, y que encima me han provocado algunos brincos en mi silla. Aquí no sentí nada de eso, por lo tanto, la película falla.
Esperaba que en la parte donde se ejecuta la sesión espiritista ocurrieran cosas más interesantes; y no mentiré, si las hay, pero uno se queda más enganchado por la curiosidad de lo que sucederá después que por un suspenso bien elaborado.
However, not everything is so bad, because in the plot we will witness an unexpected twist that to be honest took me by surprise, and for a moment I thought that the film would no longer be predictable, however, everything returns to its usual sequence of exposing things and returns to my mind the intrinsic idea that it is a predictable feature film.
Already for this part; after the unexpected twist, interesting things happen, but without any tension. The scenario takes place inside Emma Leeden's fortified house, where the protagonists are locked in and cannot get out until they defeat the evil that stalks them, and why? Because it is the logical thing to do.
Despite the fact that the film has many bad things and generates a heartbeat absent of suspense, it has some good points. The first one, which I emphasized at the beginning of my introduction, is the narrative quality; the film is understandable, it doesn't go off the deep end, the plot is well structured and the story, in my opinion, is not bad; the bad thing is how it was presented.
Sin embargo, no todo es tan malo, pues en la trama presenciaremos un giro inesperado que siendo sincero me tomó por sorpresa, y por un momento creí que la película ya no sería predecible, no obstante, todo regresa a su habitual secuencia de exponer las cosas y vuelve a mi mente la idea intrínseca de que es un largometraje predecible.
Ya para esta parte; después del giro inesperado, ocurren las cosas interesantes, pero sin nada de tensión. El escenario ocurre dentro de la casa fortificada de Emma Leeden, en donde los protagonistas quedan encerrados y no podrán salir hasta derrotar al mal que los acecha, ¿y por qué? Porque es lo lógico.
A pesar de que la película tiene muchas cosas malas y genera un latido ausente de suspenso, tiene algunos puntos buenos. El primero, al que hice énfasis al principio de mi introducción, es la calidad narrativa; la película se entiende, no se va por las ramas, se ve que la trama está bien estructurada y la historia, a mi parecer, no es mala; lo malo es como fue presentada.
The second good point is Mo'Nique's performance, it was funny, creepy, touching if you will. I've seen movies where she's been in and I like the way she gives off her essence, without going out of character of course. She has shown here in The Reading that she has a future for horror films, and that she can also play a cold-blooded psychopath and still be funny at the same time. The dialogue may not be the best, but the performance of this particular actress really won me over.
The setting is another point I liked; it's something different from what we are used to seeing in slashers; as they are usually always isolated places where the victims can't call for help. Here we have a fortified house in the suburbs, locked from the inside and it also has Wifi blocking; except only one part of the house. Scary, isn't it?
El segundo punto bueno, es la actuación de Mo'Nique, ha sido graciosa, espeluznante, conmovedora si se quiere. He visto películas donde ella ha participado y me gusta la manera como despide su esencia, sin salirse del personaje, por supuesto. Ha demostrado aquí en The Reading que tiene futuro para el cine de terror, y que además puede hacer el papel de una psicópata de sangre fría y seguir siendo cómica al mismo tiempo. Los diálogos, quizás no sean los mejores, pero la interpretación de esta actriz en particular sí que me ha convencido.
El escenario es otro punto que me gustó; es algo diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver en los slashers; ya que por lo general siempre son lugares aislados donde las víctimas no pueden pedir ayuda. Aquí tenemos una casa fortificada en los suburbios, cerrada desde adentro y que además tiene bloqueo de Wifi; excepto solo una parte de la casa. Qué espanto, ¿no?
Although its good points are relevant, the film did not convince me at all. I repeat, this play would have had more impact if it had been presented in a different way, but in this weak form, it does not produce anything; there were even moments when the empathy for Emma quickly faded until it disappeared; I think it would have been maintained until the end where the next act begins. Aunque sus puntos buenos son relevantes, la película no me convenció del todo. Repito, esta obra hubiera tenido más impacto si se hubiera presentado de otra manera, pero así de esta forma tan floja, no produce nada; incluso hubo momentos en que la empatía por Emma se apagaba rápidamente hasta desaparecer; pienso que se hubiera mantenido hasta el final donde empieza el siguiente acto.
