—Bueno, ¿quieres saber o no?

When a true genius appears in the world, he can be recognized by this sign: all fools conspire against him.
— Jonathan Swift
Many times, the eyes cannot perceive certain things. Our mind; with the need to protect us from the unknown and thus avoid entropy, blocks certainly developed senses, which only the most advanced technologies can discern, and therefore give us that connection and knowledge for the intangible things that surround us.
Kevin is a very talented twenty-two-year-old photographer with expertise and passion for capturing certain things that made him a true example of his craft. But Kevin was not just any photographer; simplicity was not inherent in his personality. He was a photographer of the supernatural: spirits, invisible entities, and all that the common eye cannot see.
His camera gave him the capability he needed, and fortunately, the black market for supernatural photography was good business. He liked to photograph the woods and inside abandoned houses, and when he was successful, he would sell the images to the highest bidder. Kevin was very proactive and didn't let failure beat him, and when he had nothing, he would edit the photos to make it look like there were specters in them.
At times he was a rogue and a hustler, but very smart. He managed to adapt to a world he had to deal with alone. One day, while walking through the main part of the municipality, reviewing some photographs on his camera, he was surprised by someone who scared him. Kevin was a bit startled and looked at the person angrily.
-Shit! What are you doing here, Emily? -Kevin held his camera tightly in both hands.
The girl he had named was Emily Midnight, a thirteen-year-old girl with a cold and sometimes pedantic attitude. For her young age, she had the mentality of an adult, and always dressed in scarves, coats, and a beret; all olive green. Kevin knew her because her brother previously gave her a job, but that ended a few months ago.
-What's up, Kevin? Did you take a lot of pictures today? -asked the girl, chewing a piece of gum.
-Step aside, girl, I have things to do and I don't have time to listen to your weird stories.
As Kevin ignored her, leaving her aside, the girl stared at him with half-open eyes.
-My brother has a job for you, do you want to know what it was about?
Kevin stopped and fixed his gaze on her.
-Alfonso Medianoche has a job for me? Now that's a surprise... -Kevin said it sarcastically, but he knew it wasn't a joke when it came to him. Although he didn't like working with Alfonso because of his strict policies, he knew it was a good opportunity because he paid very well. He was a considerate person and recognized good work, plus the cases he handled were the most irregular.
-Well, do you want to know or not? -The girl spat pedantically.
-What is it about?
-Tonight, my brother is going to hold a séance in the house of a very wealthy family, so he needs a new photographer for the meeting because the previous one died mysteriously of a heart attack, how sad isn't it? -Emily asked the question sarcastically.
Kevin didn't think about it and nodded affirmatively at the proposal.
-Okay, here's the address. You must be there at ten o'clock, remember to be on time. See you then, Kevin. The girl says goodbye with a wink in the eye and gets lost in the park.
Kevin continues on his way with a new opportunity in his hands.
That same night, Kevin arrived an hour early to prepare his equipment. The house was a massive mansion in a very exclusive area that was difficult to enter. The houses there were dreamlike, with Greco-Latin structures and pretentious marble facades. Kevin knocked on the door and was greeted by a servant. He directed him to the main hall where the session would take place.
-Kevin, dear friend, long time no see! -Alfonso Medianoche exclaimed energetically, as he gave the photographer a warm hug.
-Yes, since that time you asked me not to work with you anymore," Kevin replied bitingly.
-Oh, please, my friend! The past is the past, come, I'll introduce you to our clients.
Off to the side, leaning on a sofa, Emily was eating a chocolate bar, she waved to Kevin and then looked away.
-Kevin, this is Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cornel, and his wife, Marlena Cornel. Miss Mandy; the eldest daughter, and the youngest son, Conrado.
They all greeted each other cordially. Kevin watched them all for a moment. Mr. Cornel was a plump man with a receding hairline. His round face was adorned by a Freddy Mercury-style mustache and a completely shaved lower beard. Mrs. Montero was a very thin woman with a pale, stiff face. She showed no expression; in fact, she looked at everything with unconformity, as if something was always bothering her.
Mandy was a pretty, smiling young woman with long, light brown hair. She was always smiling, even that night she seemed very excited about the session; she kept mentioning it every ten minutes. Then there was young Conrad; an introverted boy with a crestfallen look. He didn't speak all night, he kept to himself the whole time as if something was troubling him. Kevin was struck by how thin the boy was, to his understanding, it was very 'unhealthy' this kind of thinness.
-Alfonso tells us that you have years in this particular trade, tell me, how can you sleep so well at night? -Marlena Montero asked with interest.
-Well, as in any job, you get used to it. Kevin replied succinctly. Alfonso burst out laughing, while one of the servants poured glasses of champagne.
As they chatted cordially and Kevin finished setting up his camera equipment, Alfonso clapped his hands twice, interrupting the conversation.
-It's about time...- he whispered, leaving an air of mystery in the atmosphere, "Is our photographer ready?
Kevin nodded and they all settled at an oval table that was almost in a corner. The mood lighting became dim, the fire in the fireplace was lit and a dark silence enveloped the entire room. Emily was still in the same place, it was normal for her not to participate in the sessions, but from the outside; as another kind of eyewitness.
The photographer felt complete again, for, he was working again for the Midnights, now he prayed with all his heart, that things would go well.
