During my previous posts ¹ ² covering the first chapters of the Campaign in Splinterlands, I mentioned that I was missing the introduction of abilities in the explanations, since in my opinion it’s the most important factor (almost tied with Rule Sets) to learn, and it had been delayed for quite some time. But I finally reached chapter 8, where we’ll have the introduction of abilities—an essential factor for new players to learn in order to truly compete during their Splinterlands journey!
Right at the start of the chapter, we have the text explaining what abilities are, showing where to find them on the cards, and explaining how the Sneak
This time, the cards that previously had their abilities “grayed out” finally gained access to them, and with a basic explanation, players can understand that simply hovering the mouse over the icon will reveal a description of the ability’s effects. In this match, three abilities were introduced initially: the already mentioned Sneak
By reading carefully, most players will conclude they should place Frankarsgard as the Tank in the first position, Chaos Furybringer in the second position, the Ranged cards in the last positions (since they can’t attack if they fall into the first position, as explained in previous chapters), leaving only the order of the other two cards to be defined. Once the match begins, you’ll notice that one of the enemy team’s cards also has a new ability: Snipe
The match begins with all your cards attacking first due to their higher Speed
When it’s finally Lenore Nevermore’s turn to attack, players will fully understand that the Snipe
These small details can leave beginner players completely confused and lost, but with progressive introduction and good explanations, it becomes easier to learn each of these concepts, interactions, and their impacts on battles. After all this, there’s nothing more to learn in this match—just wait for it to finish and collect your rewards.
At first, I thought it would have been important to introduce abilities much earlier in the campaign, but now I see that it makes sense to extend this stage a bit further. There are many nuances and small impacts that influence how each ability is used, and these details can easily confuse a new player and drive them away. So it’s better to let that “shock” come once they’re already quite engaged in Splinterlands 😆. I end this chapter with a very positive impression—not overloaded with information but packed with very useful knowledge for players to learn these nuances and try applying them in their matches. Let’s continue this journey and follow the evolution of the next chapters!
