@hivebuzz del badge di halloween.
A Little tail, to take part to the Halloween contest of
@hivebuzz .
She was never one to give in to imported traditions. She liked traditions, but preferred local ones. Halloween was one of her least favourite, as the culture where she lived was one of respect for the saints and the dead, those were the festivals to be observed, visits to cemeteries, with the graves of the dead being polished for the occasion and pots of colourful chrysanthemums adorning them.
He hated children dressed up as monsters, disturbing the peace and quiet of others by knocking from house to house with the fateful question "trick or treat? ", ignoring the whys and wherefores.
She always tried to stimulate the worst part of that question by answering with conviction "trick!" and she enjoyed watching the amazed faces of the children who did not expect that answer. Dumbfounded, they tried to articulate a sentence "but... no... We wanted... Sweets..."
And she finally huffed, annoyed, and begrudgingly gave them each a piece of candy to send them away! They didn't even know the song:
She hadn't put a single pumpkin outside this year, preferring to keep it intact for a nice velouté that she loved to make and eat.
She didn't want to waste time chasing the children and had preferred to go to bed early, wrapped up in her pom-pom pajamas, her head under her pillow and from there she had ignored any noise coming from the door.
The noise outside was unbearable and it took her a long time to fall asleep, but then the rain came to her aid, dispersing everyone, and finally, with the silence of the drops, she gave in to sleep.
Outside, the rain turned into a thunderstorm with lightning, thunder and thunderbolts illuminating the room through the half-closed window shutters, but she did not notice anything.
An insistent noise woke her up, it took her some time to understand what it was, then she realised that someone was knocking at her door. She went downstairs wrapping herself in her dressing gown, the knocking did not stop but insisted even more, nervous and reluctantly she went to the door asking who it was. There was no answer, only the insistence of the knocking on the door. She opened the door violently and grumpily, only to be interrupted when she saw the figure in front of her.
A wide-brimmed, partly torn hat was placed on his head, covering the face of the unknown man, who held high a stick with a hand-shaped knob, all made of ebony wood, shiny black, still raised at half height towards the door, held up with his left hand full of scars in relief, probably due to burns. A cloak with claw-like cuts covered his shoulders and body, dripping onto the entrance porch. The dark, soggy clothes that shone out from underneath the blanket looked refined but weathered. Lightning flashed across the sky as if it were daylight, showing the scarred man's face with an eye patch.
"Trick or treat?" he said in a gloomy, caveman voice.
She with a dry throat replied "trick!" appealing to all her confidence.
"So be it!" The stick rose up over her head and struck her violently causing her to fall to the ground in a heavy sleep.
The storm was still raging, she hadn't realised she was back in her bed, her own laboured breathing woke her up, she was out of breath, she instinctively brought a hand up to her neck and it met something in the fabric that was holding her, she moved frantically feeling the braided cord that was sawing through her skin, identifying it with the pom-pom string from her pyjamas; she tried to untie it, but the more she tried, the tighter it became, the more lethal the grip became, a trickle of blood began to run down her finger, hot and thick to the point of staining the sheets, she felt faint as a sinister laugh filled the room!
Trembling, she sat up in bed, gasping, quick irregular breaths now filled the room, frantically she looked around for details that would make her understand where she was and what had happened; hands at her throat again intact, free pom-poms dropping to her chest, she shook her head closing her eyes:
a bad dream, just a bad dream.
