Hi friends
We talk a lot about buildings, well it is normal in these entrances since they specialize in that.
But next to the buildings there are many urban designs that mark and distinguish the city and that is my entry for this week.
San Sebastián is a city that is close to mine, an hour and a short drive and that we usually visit very often, since apart from being very beautiful, its beach and its promenade are famous.
So that's why this post.
All the design of the city has its charm and is often its hallmark.
I will talk about the railing and the streetlights of this walk that we all call the shell, because of its shape.
The railing began to be built in 1910 and in sections they came to cover the 5 kilometers that the bay measures.
It was built in iron by Fundiciones Molinao and the architect was Juan Rafael Alday
The structure was inaugurated in 1916 when King Alfonso XIII officially inaugurated it since the city was in the process of modernity and prosperity, it was and is the preferred place for holidays and relaxation for royalty.
Each section of the railing measures 96 cm wide by 80 cm high and weighs about 40 kilos, as you can understand iron although this white enamel painting has an enemy and that enemy is salt water and here it abounds, we live in the Cantabrian A rough sea and the weather is often not lenient so they are constantly whipped, there are sections that can be replaced when corrosion leaves them ugly and bleeding urine.
Also the scholars and minds who check and understand say that it has similarities with the railings of famous ship that was the Titanic.
They were manufactured at the same time but the Titanic architect Thomas Andrews and the Basque architect did not know each other.
I have particularly been observing them and they do not seem so equal to me, but what will I know?
I only know that this railing is famous all over the world, or for all of us who visit the city.
So we can say that it is part of its architecture, which is what makes the city have a unique face, like any emblematic building.
You can appreciate that apart from doing its function of not falling into the void of the sand, it is the perfect frame for photography.
There is a section that the design changes and that is because formerly there was the Royal Case
But the beauty of the Paseo de la Concha does not end there.
In the middle of the bay is the spa, it was the most modern in all of Europe in those days, with sea water for treatments and nowadays in operation.
The building is perfectly integrated with the railing.
And every walk and city needs lights, how could it be less the lights or streetlights are with the same design of those times, and now for our pleasure we can see them at the foot of the railing, keeping company, leaving us in the evening with some images awesome.
The clock towers on the sides of the staircase that goes down to the sandy area.
Everything is design and a design that leaves its mark, something that any architect or designer dreams of.
I invite you to visit my land, a land full of charm and history.
