Hello Hives,
It's another beautiful Weekly edition of Hive student connect and this is my own take on this week prompt "this week we would like to take you back in time and then back to reality. What did you think life would be like when you were younger? What is the reality now? What has that reality taught you?"
When I was a kid, I had a very different idea of what adulthood was going to look like.
I used to think adults had everything figured out. In my mind, once you grew up, you would have money, a good job, your own place, freedom to do whatever you wanted and, most importantly, you would finally be able to enjoy life.
I don't know where I got that idea from, but I believed it then.
I remember being young and looking at older people and thinking, “I can't wait to grow up.” Funny enough, now that I have actually grown up, sometimes I wish I could go back to those days when my biggest problem was probably what I was going to eat or where I was going to play.
Nobody really tells you what adulthood feels like.
You grow up and suddenly there are bills to pay, people depending on you, responsibilities you can't run away from and decisions that can affect your future. Sometimes you are tired, but you still have to keep going. Sometimes you don't even know what the next step should be, but life does not stop to give you time to figure it out.
And then there are the dreams.
Like many people, I had things I imagined I would become. I had an idea of where I thought I would be at a certain age. But life had its own plans.
Some things worked out differently. Some dreams changed from becoming a. footballer to becoming a plumber and farmer. Some are still waiting. And there are things I thought I would have achieved by now that I haven't.
For a while, that can really bother you. You see people around you moving forward, buying houses, getting better jobs, starting businesses, travelling and achieving things you once hoped for yourself. And if you are not careful, you start feeling like you are behind in life.
But I have slowly learned something.
Life is not a race where everyone has to reach the same place at the same time.
My journey is mine. Your journey is yours.
Reality has taught me to appreciate little progress. Sometimes surviving a difficult period is an achievement too. Sometimes being able to wake up, go to work, take care of your family and keep trying is more important than it looks from the outside.
I have also learned that not everything that doesn't happen according to plan is a failure. Sometimes life changes your direction because there is something else waiting for you.
I don't have the life I imagined when I was younger.
But I have a life, a family, experiences, lessons and another opportunity to keep working towards something better.
Maybe the younger me thought growing up meant finally having everything.
The person I am today understands that growing up is actually learning to live with uncertainty, accept change, appreciate what you have and still have the courage to hope for more.
Life did not turn out exactly how I imagined it.
But honestly, I'm still here, still learning, still trying.
And for now, that is enough.
