Unsustainable Lifestyles- A Problem of Our Times a Freewrite
So many people today are in economic trouble. Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck despite regular paychecks. Unsustainable living patterns mirror current economic conditions and what gets rewarded and subsidized is multiplied. How can we rise able unsustainable living conditions in today's world at every level?
Out economic system has become unsustainable. Low-interest rates coupled with high debt have compounded and hidden problems. Zombie companies that have only been profitable due to the low cost of debt are now facing a major storm. It's a systemic problem that is incentivized by Wallstreet and the nature of our competitive economy. If a company sees a way to make money, they will take the opportunity. Firms reoort their earnings and financials every 3-months if they are publically traded, so why not just consider the next 12-weeks? It has been said that a rising tide raises all boats in relation to bull markets. It has also been said that when the tide receeds that you can tell who is skinny dipping and who is derelect in their duties.
We need to stop our reliance on debt and cheap money. The reliance of debt to keep up appearances on main street and stock prices on Wallstreet have made underlying issues worse. On a personal side, debt makes us a slave to the lender, and as the interest rates and principals rise, so too does the weight of the debt. What is the root cause of this issue? Is it the FED zero-interest policies? The results and consequences of the lockdowns around the World? Quantitative Easing? Greed in the human condition? It's all of the above and more. Debt and greed are addictions that plague society. Like the drug addict, the debt addict uses their substance to satisfy holes in their existence. Because of our lust for material items and success as a species, debt and avarice rules out minds and world.
Our world economy is a complex and interlocked. It's not a zero-sum game, but when one side wins, another loses more often times than not. We need to approach the way we live our lives with more caution as we barrel towards a recession. I see so many people living in unsustainable ways, taking on debt and saving nothing for an emergency. Don't depend upon your job exclusively for protection from the coming storm.
Try to rebalance your life. I am amazed at the extravagance of the middle class and their debt load. They emulate the wealthy at their own peril, and the zombie companies they work for do them no service. A recent news story stated that 50% of all companies were planning for layoffs, let's see where the storm leads. You know a recession is on the way when people take and make hasty decisions. Stay safe out there.
