In his famous 1957 broadcast, The Strangest Secret, Earl Nightingale stated that a man is what he thinks. The premise of the monologue was that a man can change his circumstances by focusing and using his God given potential. How can we use our thoughts to change our circumstances, and is it true for today's world? You can change your station in life by changing your thinking.

The world we live in is a lattice of interwoven alliances, changes and relationships. Life can seem overwhelming when we consider all the hardships and concerns we will face. When we understand we are what we think, we can focus our thoughts. Instead of thinking that we float through life and can be a victim of circumstance, we should focus our thoughts on a concrete plan of attack. Ask yourself what you want to be doing as your occupation, what you need to learn to bolster your skills, how you can do better and what gaps exist in your understanding. Be honest with yourself and make a written plan. Read the plan in the morning to steer your ship towards the change you want to manifest.

A major driver of our success or failure is our attitude, and how we react to the world around us. Earl defined success as the pursuit of a worthy ideal, and when you look at success as a process you can make concrete progress. When we view success as a happily ever after, it is obscured and can be mistaken for contentment. We need to continually pursue success through our mindset. How can we do this? Simply put, we need to focus on our written goals and make our actions follow those goals. Do you want to start a business and be a success in it? Open a business and put all your thoughts towards it's operations. Your thoughts are the winds in your sails.

When we point out sails in the direction of the wind, we have a potential to move towards our goals. We need to be agile, humble and patient with our ambitions and thoughts. The original thesis of Earl's broadcast was that most people would retire as wards of the state and without any financial independence. No matter what challenge we face, we are the sun of our decisions and our thoughts, a man truly is the sum of his thoughts, and many historical precidents make this ascertation clear.
